A joyful introduction is followed by a lyrical passage with an enticing melody, after which the same theme can be heard in a pop style variation. Next is a kind of trio with a melody that will linger in your mind. Lively sounds bring us back to the lyrical main theme once more, but this time exuberant, like a pop ballad. Finally, we hear the festive sounds of the introduction again, now as a lustrous conclusion.

This composition is based on the life of the German cavalry general Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut (1574-1625), who was known for his nerve, loyalty and courage. The figure Van Obentraut is closely connected to the town of Seelze, where he died a heroic death and where a monument was erected in his honour. The work consists of four movements in which various aspects of this historical figure are featured. What is extra special about this work is the fact that its first movement (Hymn for a Hero) had been made available as an easy version for flexible band. This makes it possible for a youth or beginner band to play along with a band of adults or advanced players. This hymn can also be played as a separate piece.

"Bahumba" is a nonsense word but a no-nonsense selection for concert band. The word stems from a sound composer Peter Sciaino heard coming from an idling car. The engine, clearly having issues, had an "uneven" gate or pulse. He mindlessly heard the word "Bahumba" within the sounds emerging from the struggling motor. Just like an engine, an ensemble can attain a smooth groove even if "uneven" in terms of pulse. While the percussionists are often asked to provide this groove under the melodic lines, they ultimately break out with a feature that essentially places a percussion ensemble within the context of a concert band piece. Children joined these bands on the 2nd parts, usually having only been playing for a year and they then progressed to the 1st parts the following year.The 2nd parts are written without key signatures in treble clef, in B flat major for bass clef trombone and euphonium and in E flat major for bass clef tuba. 1st parts are written with the appropriate key signatures for each piece, reflecting the greater understanding and skills of the players on these parts. Songs from the Lowlands is a collection of songs from the 16th and 17th centuries from my native country The Netherlands, formerly known as The Low Countries. They are, by turns, patriotic songs by Adriaen Valerius from the time when our country was occupied by Spain, naughty love songs and a drinking song, Peeckel-Haringh. Songs from the Lowlands was written for the farewell concert of my dear friend Jim Yarnell, who has been the director of bands at The American School of The Hague for four decades. Jim conducted the premire at his final concert, April 8, 2022, and now enjoys a well-deserved retirement. Songs from the Lowlands can be performed instrumental or with choir (SATB).

Risoluto is a music term of Italian derivation, first appearing in the mid 1700s. A great many musical terms such as this are in Italian, because many of the important composers from the Renaissance to the Baroque were from the geographic area known today as Italy and spoke some form of Italian. Consequently, performance markings in their published music, widely disseminated through the rest of Europe, were in the language that they best understood. Music marked in this manner is to be played firmly and decisively with firm resolve and little variance from the marked tempo. It can be seen that while there are several stylistic changes in this piece, the tempo varies not a bit, holding firm at Allegro vivo, quarter note at 120, from first measure to last.
