Suite from Mass - Leonard Bernstein

Bernstein's Mass was a monumental 90-minute work written for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971. In this suite commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, arranger Michael Sweeney focuses on a select number of movements, often using the brass quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the original. The striking and beautiful work includes Alleluia, Sanctus, the well-known A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and Almighty Father. Although scored for brass quintet and wind ensemble, ample cues are provided to allow this to be performed by a wind ensemble or symphonic band alone. Dur: c.14:00 (Grade 5)

    Palladio - Karl Jenkins

Although this composition sounds like it came straight out of the Baroque period, it is actually the first movement of a suite written in 1996 by Karl Jenkins. Instantly recognized as the 'diamond commercial' theme, its relentless pulse and dramatic nature make it a natural for bands. Robert Longfield's skilled arrangement puts it within reach of most groups.score and parts - 4 Flute I, 4 Flute II, 2 Oboe, 4 Bb Clarinet I, 4 Bb Clarinet II, 4 Bb Clarinet III, 2 Bb Bass Clarinet, 2 Bassoon, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone I, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone II, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 2 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 2 F Horn I, 2 F Horn II, 3 Bb Trumpet I, 3 Bb Trumpet II, 3 Bb Trumpet III, , 3 Trombone I,3 Trombone II, 2 Baritone B.C., 2 Baritone T.C., 4 Tuba, I String Bass, I Timpani, 2 Percussion I, 2 Percussion II - wind/concert band

Color Concordia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan

Concordia was the Roman goddess of concord or unity. To convey the unity among their musicians, many music societies over the years, including the band that commissioned this composition, have chosen this name. The literal translation of Color Concordia is colour harmony. Consequently, the composer has gratefully used the many ranges of colouring of the concert band for the instrumentation of this work. He based the thematic material on the four note names in Concordia: C, C, D and A, resulting in a brilliant piece of music that will suit any band.Duration: 10.15

Froissart (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Elgar, Edward - Noble, Paul

Froissart, Op. 19, is a concert overture by Edward Elgar, inspired by the 14th-century Chronicles of Jean Froissart. Elgar was first attracted to the Chronicles after finding mention of them in Walter Scott's Old Mortality. Jean Froissart (c. 1337 - c.1405), often referred to in English as John Froissart, was a medieval French chronicle writer. For centuries, Froissart's Chronicles have been recognized as the chief expression of the chivalric revival of the 14th century Kingdom of England and France. The motto written by Elgar on the manuscript score is a quotation from an 1817 poem by Keats: 'When Chivalry lifted up her lance on high.' Froissart is not a programmatic work: unlike the later Falstaff or even Cockaigne it does not tell a detailed story; it evokes a mood and manner in broad terms. The drama of the dynamics enhances the haunting melodies that identify Elgar's compositions.

Glorioso (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the Siena Wind Orchestra. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy one tone fanfare. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C, D, E flat, B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special work that highlights various facets of the modern concert band.Duration: 15.30

Three Washington Statues (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own", led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. Washington D.C. contains some of the world's most iconic monuments, memorials and statues. Philip Sparke has chosen three of these as the inspiration for this piece: 'The Lincoln Memorial' in the form of a Greek Doric temple in which the composer depicts the grandeur of this monument; 'The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial' on which steps the iconic speech 'I have a dream' was given - the music is both reverential as well as powerful referring to Martin Luther Kings' speech; and the 'Encore' statue in memory of the world famous African-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this final movement, Philip Sparke catches the virtuosic, energetic and unique dynamism of Ellington's' music.
