Gregorian chant is one of the earliest forms of notated music, using free flowing rhythms and simple melody. In Old Churches, composer Michael Colgrass uses these elements to create an aura of voices echoing in the monastery. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Conceived in the late-1990's, Jonathan Dove's Concerto for Trombone "Stargazer" is now available to buy as an arrangement for trombone and wind ensemble by James Kazik. Written for Ian Bousfield, this new arrangement received its world premiere at the Kodak Theatre, Rochester, NY as part of the International Trombone Festival on Saturday, 7th June 2014. Bousfield was accompanied by the Eastman Winds, conducted by Mark Scatterday.

Composed with high school performers in mind, the suite was inspired by an 1890s photograph and descriptions of a Wisconsin town's "Old Settlers" celebration. AFTERNOON GAMES are depicted with a Vivace scherzo in 6/8. The running and skipping leads to an extended fugue for a copycat game before returning to the opening theme.

Originally composed for solo organ, Hailstork's fanfare is a 3-minute explosion of joyous sound inspired by the Baroque-era tradition of Chorale Preludes. As in Bach's organ preludes, the familiar hymn's phrases broadly emerge from ornate counterpoint, here in the form of brass fanfares. The result is exhilarating! Also scored by Hailstork for chamber ensemble and for orchestra, FANFARE ON AMAZING GRACE was transcribed for concert band in January 2021 by MGySgt Don Patterson, staff arranger for "The President's Own" United States Military Band, for that ensemble's worldwide broadcast performance at the 2021 Presidential Inauguration.

Rejoice! was commissioned by the Kitakyushu City Foundation for Promoting Arts and Culture (KICPAC) on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the city on Feburary 10, 1063. The composer grew up in this city and feels at home there. Kitakyushu was born from the merger of five municipalities of Moji, Kokura, Tobata, Yahata and Wakamatsu centred on the ancient city of Kokura. These five former cities are represented in five themes in distinct keys at the beginning of the piece: G major, e major, g major again, Bb major and F major. Rejoice! is dedicated to the city of Kitakyushu and Mr. Kenji Kitahashi, mayor of the city. The premire was held on March3, 2013 at the Kitakyushu Soleil Hall, performed by the Comfort Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mr. Satoru Yoshihara.

This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.
