Britannica is inspired by Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches. A playful, varied introduction leads to the majestic main theme, recalling the heyday of the British Empire. It is played initially by the woodwinds, and then repeated in full orchestration. The opening section returns but quickly the music takes a different turn and finally the main theme returns in full glory. A short lively finale closes this worthy composition.

The British composer Thomas Bidgood (1870-1925) was a gifted music teacher who conducted his own professional orchestra, several theatre orchestras and wind bands. He composed a lot of light orchestral music and some fifteen marches, mong which 'Sons of the Brave' and Vimy Ridge'. The title of this march refers to a ridge situated between the town of Arras and the Flemish plain in the North of France. This ridge has been assaulted numerous times since the Roman conquest. Bidgood wrote this march after the Battle of Arras in April 1917 when the Canadians conquered Vimy Ridge which was one of the strongest fortified positions of the Hindenburg Line.

The English composer Sir Edward Elgar wrote the five Pomp and Circumstance marches between 1901 and 1930, the time of the British Empire, when the colonial and strategic world power of England was at its peak. March No. 3 in C minor, although less well-known then March No.1, was regarded by the composer as the most successful of the marches in terms of composition technique and musical content. The dark colours of the minor tonality and the hopeful sounding cantabile theme are extremely impressive, giving the march its unique character. Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to "Nulli Secundus", the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp's own marches and a festive Vivace. He made his living as a Musical Director in the London theatre world, directing and orchestrating the long-running musical Chu Chin Chow. Fletcher was a prolific composer and wrote a large number of suites for light orchestra as well as military band marches The Crown of Chivalry, Spirit of Pageantry, V.C. March, and a Sultan's March, extracted from his musical 'Cairo In 1909 the Worshipful Company of Musicians in London, England offered 5 prizes for original military band compositions. This competition attracted the attention of some fine British composers. Holst's 'Suite in Eb' was placed 3rd and this Grand March, ' The Spirit of Pageantry' was awarded 2nd prize. The winning composer was B,Walton O'Donnell, who later became an outstanding Musical Director of the BBC Wireless Military Band. The Spirit of Pageantry is a wonderful evocation of Edwardian England and deserves to be reinstated into the Concert Band repertory

In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar's music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death in 1984 he composed the "Ceremonial March". Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar's catalogue of works, the characteristic "Pomp and Circumstances" marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.Duration: 5:30
