£110.99Overture for Woodwinds - Philip Sparke
This work was commissioned for The Berkshire Young Musicians Trust (England), who required a testing piece for the woodwind section of their concert band. The piece opens with a strong unison passage based on the interval of a fifth and develops with a passionate legato. This is followed by the main vivo section of the work based on the earlier 'fifth' figures. A bridge passage leads to a short chorale figure and a rhythmic climax which dissolves into a plaintive solo for oboe over staccato clarinets. Following a recapitulation of the main theme the oboe returns triumphantly before the opening unison passage reappears to provide a stirring coda.

To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after ashort bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.

The last decades of the 20th century saw man's first steps in space exploration. Since the first moon landing by Neil Armstrong in 1969, these adventures in outer space have captured the public's imagination and have given birth to scores of science fiction movies, books and TV series that have tackled the subject. Infinity and Beyond... takes as its inspiration the wonderful film scores of composers such as John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, who have almost invented a style which could be called 'space music'.Opening with a rhythmic bass figure, Infinity and Beyond... begins with a robust introduction in 3/4, which leads to the main theme in 4/4, played by the full band. Ashort bridge passage, utilising the interval of a fourth, leads to a modal central section, featuring first the trumpets and then played by the whole band; this in turn leads back to a repeat of the introduction until the main theme returns to bring the piece to a close.

£206.99Omaggio (Euphonium Concerto No.4) (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts)) - Sparke, Philip
Omaggio was commissioned by Steven Mead in celebration of his 60th birthday and in memory of his father, Rex. He gave the premiere of the brass band version in Rome in March 2022, accompanied by the Italian Brass Band conducted by Filippo Cangiamilla. The concert band premiere took place on 6th July that year as part of the 2022 Spanish International Tuba Euphonium Conference, accompanied by the Banda municipal de msica de Malaga.The concerto is set in 3 continuous movements, which are united by a recurring syncopated interval of a fifth. The first movement, Fantasia, opens with this motive accompanying an extended monologue for the soloist. This is followed by a lengthy bridge passage by the band, which is eventually joined by the soloist, who guides the music back to the opening soliloquy, leading to an energetic central section. This develops until the opening material again returns to introduce the second movement, Ballad, which revolves around an expressive melody for the soloist, interspersed by accompanied cadenzas. The third movement, The King Triumphant, pays homage to Steven's late father, Rex, and its title alludes both to Rex's name (Rex being Latin for king) as well as his love of Eric Ball's Salvationist masterpiece, The Kingdom Triumphant. The finale is an energetic tour-de-force featuring an acrobatic 6/8 melody, which is interrupted twice by the magnificent hymn tune, Helmsley, which Ball uses so effectively in The Kingdom Triumphant. A galloping coda brings the work to a close.

The slow walking cadenza and the fear are clearly audible in the monotonous rhythm of the low brass, piano and percussion. After a wild pursuit by hostile creatures, the Orks, Gandalf is engaged in battle witha horrible monster, the Balrog, and crashes from the subterranean bridge of Khazad-D m in a fathomless abyss. To the melancholy tones of a Marcia funebre, the bewildered Companions trudge on, looking for the only way out of the Mines, the East Gate of Moria.Duration: 9.00

Guardian Angels gives a musical expression to the legend of Reverend Louis Henri Bahler referring to the use of Psalm 34. North-west Veluwe and in particular Oldebroek (The Netherlands) has a very rich religious tradition which is demonstrated by its monumental churches. They tell the story of a stirring history in which Reverend Bahler played a crucial role. Inspired by his arrival as a pastor in 1870 in the neighbouring Oosterwolde, two big religious communities came into existence with their characteristic churches but this rivalry also resulted in great social unrest. This composition reflects on this striking personality and in particular on the story of the Angel Guard. 'One evening Reverend Bahler has given a sermon in Oldebroek and he walks over the Church path through the pastures to Oosterwolde. On this dark and stormy evening Bahler's opponents are waiting for the pastor in ambush. They want to drown him in a watercourse near the Church path but abandon their plan because Bahler is accompanied by two men. The next day it comes to an encounter between Bahler and his opponents. They repent their, fortunately unexecuted, plan. Bahler firmly believes that on the previous night he walked alone over the Church path, and was not accompanied by two men. It was concluded that it must have been the angels who had protected Bahler.' Psalm 34 is central to this composition and this because of its powerful melody but also because the lyrics of verse 4 of the rhymed version fit in well with the special legend of Reverend Bahler: The Lord's angel gathered round him An invincible heavenly guard, Who tries God's will, around him So he's well guard(ed) A second melodious and harmonic cell is a musical transformation of the name 'Bahler'. This cell is varied in major and minor third chords and sometimes used as the main idea or apotheosis, but also serves as an accompanying cell or as a bridge between other melodic and rhythmic constructions. Eastbound was commissioned by the Siena Wind Orchestra of Tokyo and may be heard as a sort of urban exploration. It begins with a massive chordal progression verging into a compact, groove-driven exposition of a relatively basic motif, going on to become increasingly virtuosic and hectic, reflecting the ever-present hustle and bustle in the streets of a megalopolis. The subsequent slower section brings about an Edenic atmosphere. Some soloists are featured with expressive lines, building up towards a short climax with a blues flavour, leading back to the fast music of the beginning. The heavily scored chords of the beginning reappear only towards the ending of the piece, like pillars of the musical bridge spanning the entire piece. Another acceleration finally leads to a turbulent close. Duration: 8.15
