£124.95SWORD AND THE CROWN, The (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gregson, Edward
In 1988 I was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company to write the music for The Plantagenets trilogy, directed by Adrian Noble in Stratford-upon-Avon. These plays take us from the death of Henry V to the death of Richard III. Later, in 1991, I wrote the music for Henry IV parts 1 and 2, again in Stratford. All of these plays are concerned with the struggle for power (the crown) through the use of force (the sword) and they portray one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the British monarchy.This work quickly became established in the mainstream repertoire and has received performances worldwide as well as five commercial recordings and many broadcasts. In 2002 I was approached by the Parc and Dare Band regarding their summer festival and commissioned to do a version for brass band. This was given its first performance in Treorchy Hall by the combined bands of Black Dyke and Parc and Dare conducted by Nicholas Childs.When the Royal Air Force Music Services commissioned me to write a work especially for their British tour in 1991 I immediately thought of turning to this music and transforming some of it into a three-movement suite for symphonic band.The first movement opens with a brief fanfare for two antiphonal trumpets (off-stage), but this only acts as a preface to a Requiem aeternam (the death of Henry V) before changing mood to the English army on the march to France; this subsides into a French victory march, but the English army music returns in counterpoint. Finally, a brief reminder of the Requiem music leads to the triumphal music for Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, father of Edward IV and Richard III (the opening fanfare transformed).The second movement takes music from the Welsh Court in Henry IV (part 1) which is tranquil in mood; distant fanfares foreboding battles to come are heard, but the folktune is heard three times in different variations and the movement ends as it began with alto flute and gentle percussion.The final movement starts with two sets of antiphonally placed timpani, drums and tam-tam, portraying the 'war machine' and savagery of battle. Malcolm Arnold's Four Irish Dances are from the latter stage of his career. The 1986 piece complements his other regional dance suites for orchestra, including Cornish, English and Scottish dances, though it darker in mood and colour. Stomping brass and drums in the opening Allegro con Energico give way to two spare middle movements: a Comodo made from anguished melodic imitation and a lilting Piacevole with eerie solo piccolo and miniature trio for trumpets. The 11 minute piece concludes with a wild, contrapuntal jig in triple time.The original orchestra version of the work was premiered at the Leeds Castle Festival on 10 October 1987, by the Wren Orchestra conducted by the composer.

As the title suggests, is a celebration of life's conquering obstacles, specifically of the composer's own personal battle against cancer. Written for the Upper Sandusky High School (Ohio) Wind Ensemble and with the thanks from the composer for the support and opportunity to compose this piece during a very difficult period of time, "Rejoissant!" opens with a slower dramatic fanfare in the brass and percussion. The simple but forceful melody is repeated in several forms throughout the piece, including the beautiful and melodic middle section. This exceptionally emotional and energetic composition is suitable for all concerts and especially festival performances. Duration: 6.00

This piece is a celebration and can be played at any happy occasion. It was written to celebrate 30 years of the Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra in 2017. The music grows from syncopated rhythms and a five note motif which is use to form melody and chords. There is a strong rhythmic undercurrent in percussion and in the interplay between sections. The motif is clearly heard in the flutes and clarinets in an imitative section before the key changes to form a second theme on the oboe then the flute. These secondary themes are still formed from the original motif before the music recapitulates the multi time signatures from earlier in the piece. The relentless pace drives the music to a flourish of upper woodwind and a syncopated brass coda. Duration: 4.30

The theme is a noble hymn tune by Sir Hubert H. Parry, associated with the words 'O praise ye the Lord'. There are seven contrasting variations that will provide much interest to the player as well as the listener, the seventh of which is a fugato which leads into a triumphant finale where the theme is heard for the first time in its completion. This, we feel, will be a significant work for Wind Band as it has been for the brass band movement.

The tune is first presented using the lush harmonies, full textures and interesting inner lines that have become a Dave Black trademark. £264.99Poeme Montagnard (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
Jan Van der Roost received the commission for this work from the Orchestre d'Harmonie du Val d'Aoste and dedicated the composition to Lino Blanchod, the conductor of the orchestra. The first performance was on 26th January 1997 by the orchestra itself and under the direction of the composer. This extensive symphonic poem depicts the atmosphere and history of the autonomous French speaking region Val d'Aoste in northern Italy, and is meant as a musical homage to the historical figure Catherine de Challant. The opening of this piece describes the rugged nature of this region dominated by Mont Blanc, the roof of Europe. A brief, combative passage conjures up the numerous wars fought here through the ages, later expanding into a surprising 'Renaissance Dance' with an original and fitting recorder quartet. A broad, lyrical theme portrays the love that has always played an important role here. After recapturing several of the earlier themes, the piece closes with the renaissance dance, this time played by the brass. A spectacular finale brings this symphonic poem to a close.Duration: 18:30
