The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x005F_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x005F_x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.

The Wilderness - Rossano Galante
The wilderness is a dark, musical journey that captures the beauty and harshness of a cold, snow covered forest in the mountains. The main theme,stated by winds, captures the solitary feeling of the vastness of the landscape. This theme is interrupted by dissonant brass ostinatos. After the full orchestra reiterates the main theme, the work transitions to a lyrical, melancholy theme. This is the wilderness at night when it is dark and solitary. The piece continues with a fast, dramatic theme capturing a sense of danger that the inhabitants of the forest create. The piece concludes with the full ensemble recapitulating material from the main opening theme.

Expert Level (correlates with Book 2, p. 15) John has crafted an outstanding moderate tempo march in a Spanish style. The first strain is bold and elegant with the brass playing the melody. The second strain starts with a legatoclarinet line, then closes with the full ensemble.

Commissioned by the Gamma Eta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, at Furman University, Greenville, SC, this impressive work is built around two chorale themes and a recurring fanfare. After the boldly stated opening, a bright allegro developmental section becomes increasingly more intense until a dramatic cadence is reached. At this point, antiphonal brass (3 trumpets, 2 trombones) soar above the ensemble and play a grandiose version of the first chorale. The band re-enters and both ensembles play the climactic ending to the work, in a new key, and with both hymns being heard simultaneously. Marvelous work! (6:00)

TranZendental Danse of Joi - James Bonney
This energetic new work fuses the percussion of street musicians, the wind and brass colors of modern jazz, and the form and structure of classical music. Percussionists play everything from plastic buckets to clay flowerpots while laying down a heavily syncopated groove.
