2nd Movement of A Tribute to Arthur DelamontFamed bandmaster Arthur Delamont always programmed a hymn in his concerts and Memento is an homage to that proud tradition. Starting with a simple and reverent solo trumpet and introducing other brass instruments one by one, the introduction has the sound of a brass band. The woodwinds join in and, with the use of rich textures and dynamic scoring, the work builds to a powerful climax and then resolves once again with the solo trumpet. Ideal for festival use, Memento will give your ensemble an opportunity to explore expression and nuance. Based on the shaped note melody Saints Bound for Heaven, Jubilee by James Curnow captures a feeling of joyful celebration through a series of unique and skilfully adapted variations. The opening strains are actually fragments of the first variation and occur before the main tune is introduced by low brass and woodwinds. The second variation features a euphonium solo and builds to a glorious climax with the full ensemble. The final variation is joyful and filled with energy, using flourishes in the woodwinds and fanfares in the brass for a grand conclusion to this marvellous work.Duration: 5:30

Score & Parts. Canyons is a response to the imposing landscape of the American South West, an exploration of musical ideas. The piece falls into four main sections. Following a build-up in the brass and woodwind, there is a slowish first section with massive chords, percussive pounding and some contrapuntal development of the work's main thematic idea. This is followed by a brief scherzo and then a slow movement which again derives from chordal material and another contrapuntal development. The fourth section is an extended Allegro Vivace, dominated by a dance-like theme introduced by the trumpets and an important motif heard at the start by the brass and percussion. After the final climax, the Adagio epilogue leads the music to a quiet close, the solo piccolo restating the cornet figure heard at the opening of the work. (Grade 4.5) Duration: 15 mins. Edelweiss Brass Orchestra is a Japanese concert band based in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1978, the ensemble has grown from musical strength to strength and in 2018 they commissioned a new work with Jan Van der Roost for their 40th anniversary concert. The title Hidamari could loosely be translated as "In the Sunshine". A short quote from the famous musical The Sound of Music (you got it, 'Edelweiss'!) is a subtle nod to the name of the commissioning ensemble. Hidamari reflects the idea that EBO is like a home for all musicians: together, they are one big family.

Nova Stella: New Star Fanfare is based on the chorus of the traditional English carol, Nova! Nova! Ave Fit Ex Eva. The fanfare begins with three or more antiphonal brass players placed throughout the concert hall. Large percussion forces, which includes optional parts, are used to help introduce the rest of the ensemble as they join in the musical celebration.
