Flight - Brian Balmages
Premiered at Carnegie Hall, this minimalistic fanfare celebrates SpaceShipOne, the first privately manned spacecraft to exceed an altitude of 62 miles twice within two weeks. The three sections explore the launch to space, reaching the apogee (weightlessness), and the return to the atmosphere. Here's a marvelous arrangement featuring the engaging sounds of folk music from Sweden. It opens with a brief fanfare followed by In The Summer The Sun Shines So Clearly. After the lovely 3/4 melody Flowers Of Joy, Eric alternateswoodwind and brass choirs on the dignified O Varmland. The lively song My Love Like A Dainty Shepherdess is written in 3/4 for ease of reading, and the medley concludes with a majestic setting of The King. Well scored with plentyof variety.

The Capriccio was composed in 1963. A slow introduction is followed by a lively dotted theme with woodwind and brass, which is quite typical for Poot's style, but which makes the ensemble playing extremely delicate. The melodious second theme with the woodwind, changes into an andantino with a nice and broadly developed melody played by the clarinets and euphoniums. After a brief come-back of the initial theme the composition ends with a sparkling allegro vivo that summarizes all previous themes and motifs.

The Dutch composer Meindert Boekel (Amsterdam, 1914 - Hilversum, 1989) became famous because of the Scherzo from his 'Suite Classique' already published by Molenaar Edition in 1948. Boekel was, no doubt, one of the pioneers of modern wind music in The Netherlands. He became popular as the first conductor of the Dutch National Brass Band in 1962. He composed some sixty works for band; several of them were of religious inspiration.

There is a central section to the work wich depicts the brides procession in a large cathedral church. The Coda shows the brides party as they leave to celebrate the wedding. The solo ensemble could stand for this item which is a useful short item for a band programme.

In 1990 Jochem Slothouwer composed Hymns and Cances II. This work for symphonic band and harp (ad libitum) is based on Hymns and Dances I for piano, mixed choir and percussion. The compostition is based on the contrast between hymnlike melodies and dance music episodes. The work, in five connected parts, seems to look for a reconciliation of both melodic and rythmical elements. The initial theme with the horns and the answer of the band form the base of the first part.The second part, charcterized by a vitorous dance rhythm, is dominated by the percussionn and syncopated motifs with the brass. A melody with the euphoniums almost imperceptibly slips into the ensemble and gradually gets to the foreground. The dance and the hymn reach a real climax interrupted by a short and dark intermezzo (part three). The clear sonority of part four, a fiery tarantella with many small byt virtuoso solos, is a new contras. The final adagio reuses the previously developed ideas of part one and ends in sheer ecstasy.
