Fanfare For A Friend - Bert Appermont
'Fanfare for a Friend' was originally composed as an introductory piece for the brass ensemble Musica Mosana and their conductor Mark Prils. The work begins with a brilliant brass fanfare that presents the main theme for the first time. This stately theme can be heard in counterpoints throughout the first 28 bars. This is followed by a contrasting and rapid part whereby a melodic theme can be heard against a more rhythmic accompaniment. A virtuoso and sweeping passage then leads to the grandioso in which both themes are played simultaneously in a grand finale.

Dublimania - Menno Bosgra
This new work is based on Irish folk music. In the first part, the main theme is presented as a ballad, starting with the piccolo (as replacement for the flute which is widely used in Ireland), moving on the wood section to end with the entire orchestra. It then changes to a kind of rock style theme: powerful, rhythmic accompaniment with effects in dampers, a pedal point and the use of the spoons which is typical of Irish music (Irish pub), high-range bongo drum (replacement for the Bodhran), etc.In this second part I introduced a second theme as a counterbalance, played by several groups, which has clearly a more legato character and therefore sounds more melodious. The climaxof the work starts in the low-range brass section with its marcato theme that is developed with a great deal of rhythmicity in the accompaniment, clusters, etc. into a percussion solo interspersed by the orchestra in five-eight time with frequent parallel movement in chords (folk music style).Towards the end, theme 2 recurs twice: first as heard earlier with an extra counter melody and accompaniment pattern, then in a canonical form, in which the theme is played by three groups. The conclusion is a repeat of the middle section in five-eight time.I have tried to use many of the colours of a wind orchestra by having the wood sections and brass section play alone and making extensive use of dampers. Percussion also has a prominent role throughout the work.

The falcon of Egypt - Rossano Galante
The Falcon of Egypt is a bold, romantic and heroic work that takes the listener on a musical journey through the eyes of an Egyptian Falcon. The composition does not use traditional western harmony. I utilized the Phrygian mode to capture the essence of Egypt. The piece consists of three main themes. The opening melody introduces us to the Falcon, flying through Egypt. Robust brass lines accompanied by energeticwoodwind ostinati. The second section captures the beauty of this creature by creating lush chords, lyrical themes and countermelodies. The final statement is strong, flowing and lyrical, accompanied by brass rhythms and percussive elements. The piece concludes with a slower, grandiose version of the main thematic statement.

Hanover Festival - Philip Sparke
The Hanover Wind Symphony, New Jersey, USA was founded in 1984 by its conductor Peter Boor. He commissioned HANOVER FESTIVAL to celebrate the band's 15th Birthday and the first performance took place on October 27th 1999. The piece starts with a solemn brass fanfare. Woodwinds join in and the music subsides into an expressive chorale. A climax is reached and the fanfare returns. Trumpets introduce an explosive vivo section, characterised by an energetic theme from the horns and low clarinets. A bridge passage with strong brass chords leads to a playful section that introduces a legato central theme under woodwind figures. This is taken up by the full band, the playfulmusic returns and the original horn tune is reintroduced. Finally the opening fanfare returns, this time accompanied by music from the vivo section, until a fast and furious coda closes the work.

Highwood Overture - John Tatgenhorst
This exciting overture opens with a fanfare section that emphasizes the brass and is active rhythmically as well as harmonically. A strong, full sound will result from the richly scored chromatic parallel triads. For musicalcontrast, the middle section is quasi-rubato and very lyrical, relying mainly on the woodwinds with low brass added later. The transition back to the original rhythmic fanfare is smoothly written and effectively brings the work toa close. This overture is a fine choice for concert, contest and festival. (Grade 3)

Song for Hope - Michael Sweeney
Written as a memorial for a middle school band student, this sensitive and moving work opens with a chorale played by off-stage brass. A flowing melody stated in the low register is then developed before leading to a brieffanfare-like affirmation. The Korean folk song You and I is briefly quoted before returning to the off-stage brass and calm closing passage. A beautifully scored lyric piece for band. (Extra players are not required for theoff-stage parts.) Dur: 4:30
