Red Lines (CB) - Stijn Aertgeerts
Red Lines was commissioned by the Swiss Army Brass Band and their conductor Philipp Werlen. The title is a reference to their very distinctive black uniforms with Red vertical lines. Switzerland is a country with a tremendously rich brass band culture and have some of the best bands in the world. The individual level of musicians is also of incredibly high quality. The work begins very bombastically with continuous 8th notes. This immediately sets the drive for the entire first movement where the low brass and woodwinds can also show off huge sounds several times. It culminates in a grand tutti before the music calms down in the second movement where the euphonium can show its solistic qualities and the band can show a big difference in dynamics and sound. The final movement is driven by the drums and timpani that provide a solid boost to keep moving the thematic material forward in the band and through the percussion solo a big build-up to a glorious finale.

Mutations - Robert W. Smith
Featuring the concert band's brass section and an offstage trumpet ensemble, this contemporary work draws its inspiration from the mutation of sound and its transmission throughout the ensemble and performance environment. From a dark and mysterious beginning with muted sounds on all brass instruments, the timbre and sonority slowly mutates through various musical environments. As the brass section mutates to open sounds, the result is a stunning and glorious music statement that transforms the ensemble and audience alike.

Centennial Prelude - Jan Van der Roost
This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed! It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

Fantasy For Winds - Lorenzo Pusceddu
The piece opens with a sumptuous celebratory fanfare dominated by the brass section. In the following Allegro, the woodwind instruments weave their graceful melodious plots, with occasional intense interruptions by the brass section. The piece continues with Valzers where the initial melancholic mood set by the woodwind is superseded by the brass section harkening back to modal musical mode before, once more, being taken up by the woodwind instruments. The piece closes with a gently expressive Andante. The gentle delicacy of this section moves to a moderate Allegro featuring a running dance with light-hearted irregular rhythm. The return to the opening fanfare brings us back to the anniversary celebrations of the Band and a solemn final sequence to the composition. The debut performance took place under the direction of the composer at the Gala Concert on March 28, 2009.

Cerimonial Ouverture - Lorenzo Pusceddu
This work is characterised by the strong presence of the brass section. Already in the introduction, a sombre pedal is followed by a dialogue between the trumpets and horns that augments as we are conducted to the luminous entrance of the entire band. The brass section, with the vital support of the percussion instruments, also dominates the subsequent movement. The central part is in decided contrast to the rest of the work;the woodwind section becomes the key protagonist of the scene, with sweet melodies and delicate, harmonious embellishments. The initial atmosphere then returns, with the former hierarchy re-established and the unequivocal finale features a powerful cord played by the brass section alone.

Flight - Claude T. Smith
Flight is the official march of the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. It was commissioned by the Air Force Band in 1984 and was premiered by the organization in November of that year. Their recording can be still heard as visitors enter the museum. A highly descriptive work, it incorporates the Pachelbel Canon by request in the opening section before the brass introduces a soaring theme. Sweeping reeds, active percussion and melodic brass are featured in preparation for a most electrifying 6/8 section. Brass fanfares of particular brilliance bring the work to its exciting conclusion.
