Sing Lullaby (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
Sing Lullaby, also known as The Infant King, is an arrangement of a Basque Carol. The words were translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) an Anglican priest and folk song collector. The melody was harmonized by the English organist and music editor Edgar Pettman (1866-1943) who included it with other Basque carols (also rendered by Sabine Baring-Gould) in The University Carol Book in 1922. I use a little of Pettman's harmony but also take a different look. I also set it in 3/4 time rather than Pettman's 6/8 (starting with an anacrusis) which allowed me more freedom of expression and a chance to use a few hemiolas in poignant moments. It is a beautiful, tender carol as befits a lullaby though not without a few suspensions which allude to the future trials of the Infant King described in Baring-Gould's words.- Rob WiffinDuration: 4.15

Cats (Songs from the musical) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lloyd Webber, Andrew - De Meij, Johan
The musical Cats, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. It became Lloyd Webber's third great success, after the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. He began setting Eliot's poems to music in 1977, and the compositions were first presented as a song cycle in 1980. Producer Cameron Mackintosh then recruited director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynne to turn the songs into a complete musical. Cats became one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. It received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The following year, Cats opened at New York's Winter Garden Theatre, its home for the next 18 years, garnering seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show returned to Broadway in 2016, where it had a successful pre-tour run at the Neil Simon Theatre. Cats has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 16 languages, and seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Lloyd Webber's magnificent musical score includes the poignant hit song Memory, which has been recorded by over 150 artists, from Barbra Streisand to Liberace to Barry Manilow. It took 7,486 chandelier crashes for Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera to take over from Cats as the longest-running show in Broadway history in January 2006.Duration: 8.15

Compostela (The Way of St. James) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Deleruyelle, Thierry
Four roads lead to Santiago, so begins the Book of the Pilgrim. Written in the 12th century, the Codex Calixtinus opened the way for pilgrimage from most cities in Europe and North Africa to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Compostela - The Way of St James describes the pilgrims' journey. After a slow introduction, a brilliant theme announces the start of the journey. The arrival in Spain is indicated by incantatory chants and majestic chords. Finally, the music softens as the pilgrims venerate St James.Duration: 11.30

William Byrd Suite, Two Movements from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jacob, Gordon - Wagner, Douglas E.
Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including "The Earle of Oxford's Marche" and "Wolsey's Wilde." Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band. A wealth of material here that opens doors to teachable moments as musical textures (dynamic contrasts, articulations, scoring options) are continually changing. Bravo! Duration: 2.30

Goblin Dance (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - McBride, Jonathan
Goblin Dance for beginning band uses only the first six notes learned in band instruction, and is an ideal bridge from method book exercises to concert music! Unison themes are introduced so each member of the band gets to play the melody, before dividing into melody and harmony provided by the low brass and woodwinds. A second theme is introduced in unison, followed by the Goblin Dance finale when all three parts: melody, harmony, and second theme join together for an exciting and mature-sounding finish. You and your bands will enjoy working on this catchy and rhythmic beginning band piece that your audiences will love. Spooky fun! Duration: 1.30

Labyrinth for Symphonic Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Aagaard-Nilsen, Torstein
I wrote Labyrinth to celebrate the 450th anniversary for the city of Fredrikstad. The Danish king Fredrik II agreed to establish a new town further down the river Glomma, to make it easier to defend from the Swedes. The piece is a network of quotations mixed with my own pitch material. My versions of the quoted melodies are not authentic, and sometimes hard to recognize. However, the different quotations give the music an aura of tonality. For example, a dance tune composed by the Flemish composer Mattheus Le Maistre (1505-1577). The melody also occurs in the first danish book of hymns written after the reformation. Since Norway for 400 years was a part of Denmark and everybody had to write and read Danish, they used much of the same music, too. I also use regular Danish hymn tunes and quote from a religious folk song from the area around Fredrikstad. The military signals I use are authentic (for example, The Old Danish March), and I am very sure they were used in the Old Town (the fortress) of Fredrikstad. The drums quote from The Downfall of Paris. This could have been heard played by professional soldiers hired by the Swedes from Scotland. This edition is a revised version made in 2020. - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen. Duration: 23.00
