This attractive concert march starts with an elevated, determined intro, followed by a playful theme in the descant register - with, in the reprise, an added counterpart in the tenor register. The following stately bass solo is accentuated by the trumpet section, and a dynamic contrasting effect adds extra colour. The trio part starts with a new cantabile theme, which transforms into a solid tutti version with ornamentations in the descant. After a dynamically varying interlude the trio part is repeated. 04:50

A fanfare introduces This festive march is introduced by a lively fanfare which leads into the first, playful, melodic line which features a regular dynamic alternation and a light syncopated rhythm. After the traditional bass solo, the first theme returns. The initial theme, performed by piano and cantabile trio, later sounds in a jubilant forte with various figurations in the higher woodwinds. Wim Laseroms composed Viva Excelsior on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of music society Excelsior in Losser (the Netherlands).After a powerful tutti entry, the percussion section bridges the period up to the first reprise. This festive march is then followed by a playful melodic theme in which the semi-quavers prevail, accompanied by a beautiful legato countermelody in the horns and euphoniums. During the second reprise a marcato bass solo and a technically sparkling and dynamic contrasting phase alternate. Divertimento is an outstanding composition by Roger Boutry for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra. This great work is really nice to play and will enlighten the audience. The Orchestracomposition required is: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Bassoons, 2 small Clarinets, Clarinet I, Clarinet II, 1 Bass Clarinet, 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, 1 Baritone Saxophone, 4 Horns, 4 Bb or C Trumpets, 4 Trombone or 3Trombone and an Euphonium, 1 Bb or C Bass, 1 Double Bass, 1 Harp, Timpani, Drum and a Celesta. It is divided into three parts: I. "Allegro ma non troppo", is strongly rhythmic and syncopated.Itincludes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone and is written as a tribute to Jazz music. II. "Andante", also includes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone but at the end of the section. It is reminiscent of slowerblues ballads. III. This part features few sections by the Solo Saxophone but is specially highlighted its ending, in a bright and fast finale. This volume features the score and parts for all theinstruments. Born in France in 1932, Roger Boutry received numerous prizes, including those for Piano, Composition and Conducting. He received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1954. His career was quite successful,alternating between Harmony professor, composer and conductor. He also received numerous prizes for his incredible compositions.

Starbound is a strong, driving piece and relies on good rhythmic playing from the bass instruments. It is a good introduction to playing triplets for all sections of the band and this could be introduced in the preliminary exercise. The trumpet solo could be played by the whole section if preferred.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics.Duration: 1:45
