With words and music written by John Rutter, Nativity Carol is one of his earlier and frequently performed carols for Christmas. The beauty and simplicity lends itself to an arrangement for Concert/Wind Band that offers a variety of tonal combinations to interest a young band, and depth of feeling and meaning for the more experienced players. It may be performed with or without a chorus. The arranger is delighted to add this piece to the catalogue, one that will reach out to the players without stretching the limits of their technical abilities.

The Salvation Army Band in my home town of Chatham, part of a conurbation of 5 towns in the South East of England known as the Medway Towns, celebrated their 135th anniversary in 2016 and this piece was composed as part of those celebrations. I suppose to some degree all composers and lyricists are pioneers, always striving to write something different and new. Well, there has been a number of 'creatives' who at one time or another have been members of the Chatham Corps and this piece includes songs from some of those. The opening motif is based on the 1st 3rd and 5th notes of the scale and after a short 'fanfare-like' introduction the tune of Blacklands (Ray Steadman-Allen) is heard in 4/4 time. This is followed by a song from Ray Jones, a former Bandmaster of the Corps entitled 'On resurrection day', a song for children's voices published in 1971 and for mixed voices in 2009. Rosemary Steadman-Allen's 'To know and do thy will' is at the heart of the link into 'Everywhere', a new setting of John Gowans' words by Andrew Maycock (both former members) which is proving to be very popular at the moment. Finally, an arrangement of this composer's setting of 'Praise the Lord' is used to bring this piece to its conclusion. It was first performed on October 1st 2016 by the Chatham band under the leadership of Bandmaster Ray Maycock.

Take a trip through the?Donut Factory!?Donut Factoryis a lighthearted beginning band piece inspired by the idea of a factory where donuts travel a conveyor belt and get shaped, glazed, iced and sprinkled. It features a fun bass line for the low brass in which the trombones play a glissando. Various auxiliary percussion instruments are used throughout to depict the various stages of the donut making process. Simple quarter and eighth note rhythms and limited pitches are ideal for the young band.

Rejoice and sing! was written in celebration of the 95th birthday of Sir David Willcocks. John Rutter writes: I was delighted to be asked by OUP to compose a new carol in his honour. Writing 'Rejoice and sing!' I recalled the many happy Christmas concerts he conducted with the Bach Choir in London's Royal Albert Hall, thinking also of his fondness for quirky rhythms, hence the lopsided 7/8 which runs through much of the music. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by band alone. It is compatible with the original version except that it is transposed down by one-half step (semi-tone).

This complete arrangement of The Music for the Royal Fireworks was made in January 2017 at the request of Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Roberts, Senior Director of Music of the Household Division. I tried to make the version as close to the original as possible while arranging it to work for modern symphonic band. Although tempting, I did not want to ?€arrange?€ it too much, certainly not as much as the familiar Hamilton Harty arrangements. Consequently I kept the whole work in the same key of B flat, either major or minor, and made a few logical adjustments for the lower key and the technical facility of modern instruments. I have added a few apposite dynamics and articulations. I have also notated the music in the appropriate ?€French?€ style, writing out the double-dotted figures, especially in the Overture. In doing this I have gone further than the limited suggestions in the Eulenburg edition and taken account of the expertise of exponents of ?€Historically Informed Performance?€. The instrumentation is for full band but would work without trombones and saxophones and, to a lesser extent, flutes; clarinets though, are essential.Duration: c. 20
