Dancing on Air - Jon Bubbett

by Jon Bubbett was inspired by watching eagles flying at the Circle B Bar Reserve in central Florida. Flocks of bald eagles flying over Lake Hancock twisting and turning in the breeze as graceful as ballet dancers in a perfectly synchronized choreography. But then on occasion, they go on the hunt. Diving straight down from their "dancing height" into the water below in search of dinner! Twists, turns, and exciting writing make this fun to play and to listen to.

    Day Dreams - Dana Wilson

This work was commissioned in honor of the 75th birthday of the wonderful conductor Frank Battisti. It is based entirely on the musical pitches extracted from his name (FFrAAnk BABAttisti), forming the musical motive F A B A. In order to recognize the arc of his life and career, Day Dreams traces a metaphorical day. The movement titles all come from Thoreau's ---a place very close to where Frank spent a good part of his life. The work begins with a dramatic sunrise. The second movement represents morning (or youth), and juxtaposes two extremely contrasting and seemingly irreconcilable types of material, typical of that stage of life. The third movement explores the afternoon (adulthood), a period of sophisticated balancing of life's many forces. The final movement is a sunset, with each individual player saying goodbye.

Sandstone and Marble - Adam B. Levowitz

This brilliant trumpet showpiece was written for SGM Chuck Seipp of The United States Army "Pershing's Own." The fast scalar passages and extensive double tonguing show off the players' technique, and this is contrasted by lyrical lines and smooth slurring throughout the range of the instrument. The band parts are rhythmically interesting with some great colorful parts to play as well. Lyrical woodwind solos and powerful brass writing, combined with the flashy solo part, make this work enjoyable by both players and audiences. With the composer conducting, the world premiere was performed on the steps of the US Capitol in Washington, DC (made of sandstone and marble), overlooking the Washington Monument and the reflecting pool.
