Rejoice and sing! was written in celebration of the 95th birthday of Sir David Willcocks. John Rutter writes: I was delighted to be asked by OUP to compose a new carol in his honour. Writing 'Rejoice and sing!' I recalled the many happy Christmas concerts he conducted with the Bach Choir in London's Royal Albert Hall, thinking also of his fondness for quirky rhythms, hence the lopsided 7/8 which runs through much of the music. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by band alone. It is compatible with the original version except that it is transposed down by one-half step (semi-tone).

This suite depicts various aspects of contemporary existence. First there is The Beating Heart of the City (3.20) with its clamour, jagged edges and persistent nervous energy. This is followed by an aspect of life that is timeless ?€" the vista of Clouds (3.30). This quiet and impressionistic movement is all about shapes gently forming and then merging and shifting. Finally, Coach Ride (3.06) is a manic journey on a bus (obviously not taking in the M25). This fast and furious little piece was originally written as an encore for the Buckinghamshire Symphonic Wind Ensemble. It is a romp of a coach ride during which a couple of nursery rhymes appear, including ?€The wheels on the bus go round and round?€.Duration: 10

This complete arrangement of The Music for the Royal Fireworks was made in January 2017 at the request of Lieutenant-Colonel Kevin Roberts, Senior Director of Music of the Household Division. I tried to make the version as close to the original as possible while arranging it to work for modern symphonic band. Although tempting, I did not want to ?€arrange?€ it too much, certainly not as much as the familiar Hamilton Harty arrangements. Consequently I kept the whole work in the same key of B flat, either major or minor, and made a few logical adjustments for the lower key and the technical facility of modern instruments. I have added a few apposite dynamics and articulations. I have also notated the music in the appropriate ?€French?€ style, writing out the double-dotted figures, especially in the Overture. In doing this I have gone further than the limited suggestions in the Eulenburg edition and taken account of the expertise of exponents of ?€Historically Informed Performance?€. The instrumentation is for full band but would work without trombones and saxophones and, to a lesser extent, flutes; clarinets though, are essential.Duration: c. 20

Johan Baptist Georg Neruda was a classical composer born in Bohemia which is now part of the Czech Republic. Very little is known about this composer other than he had a good reputation as a violinist and conductor in Prague and Germany and became the Konzertmeister of the Dresden Court Orchestra.This concerto was composed originally for the natural horn and pitched in the high register. It is now rarely performed on anything other than an E flat or B flat trumpet.

Visions is one of John Rutter's most recent compositions (2016). It was written for violin solo, treble voice choir, strings and harp. This arrangement maintains the violin solo as an option, but it is presented as a flute (and optionally with a movement for alto flute) solo with band. The vocal parts are included as an option, but the arrangement is also scored so that it may be performed without the treble choir. Visions is a tribute to Jerusalem, with the four movements titled: 1. Jerusalem the blessed; 2. Arise, shine; 3. Lament for Jerusalem; 4. Finale: The holy city. A showcase for the soloist, the depth of meaning and feeling in this music will make it an important addition to the repertoire of the Concert/Wind Band.

Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the Bronze Age. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energetic overture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel. All-Night Vigil (Vespers) is a setting of music for a night-long service on the eves of Russian Orthodox holy days, and became one of Rachmaninoff's favorite compositions. Basing the 15 movements of his choral setting on a combination of traditional Russian Orthodox chants, Latin hymns, and original chants by the composer, the work was completed in less than two weeks in 1915. This arrangement utilizes the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 10th, and 12th movements, along with the traditional "Amens" at the beginning of Movements 1 and 2. Unlike other settings of choral works for wind ensemble, this arrangement is constructed as a complete suite that is intended to allow the performers and audience to experience the power and beauty of the complete Vespers.
