Everything started when two Frenchmen, Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, after having sold over ten records with their band, the Ritchie Family, decided to try out something new. The basic idea was to form a new group inspired by the American male myths of the seventies: cowboys, Indians, men in leather clothes, soldiers and policemen. This is how the Village People were born.Their secret was their energy, cheerfulness and tongue in cheek humour combined with strong disco beat and an arresting visual presence. In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

Otto M. Schwarz is endeavoring to contribute new ideas to concert band literature. He has contributed in the field of multimedia (Asteroid), and with his many compositions in symphonic/modern arrangement (Jazz Waltz No 1, Fire and Ice or Band Fever). His new composition Funk Attack is, as the name suggests, a piece in funk style. Otto M. Schwarz first gained his experience in his style in the 8o?s, transcribing numbers by famos Amerarican bands including "Earth, Wind and Fire", "Tower of Power"", and the British slap idol "Mark King" (Level 42). Funk attack is atypical of "the concert band scene" and requires absolute precision in phrasing and rhythm. Without the support of agreat percussion groove, the orchestra plays an interlocked theme in the central section in style of recent American Big Bands. Otto M. Schwarz dedicated this work to "Alexander Veit and Symphonic Winds".

This grand work contains four contrasting movements. The first movement, Prelude, takes the form of an overture: it raises the curtains and marks the beginning of the piece. The brilliant motifs of the opening are contrasted by a calmer and more lyrical central section, after which the triumphant opening returns for the movement's end. The second movement, Meditation, explores the intimate sounds of the oboe, as well as those of the flute and French horn, backed by a rich orchestral accompaniment. The third movement presents a more upbeat Procession, but not a Procession of the Nobles, as written by Rimsky-Korsakov. Quite the opposite, Procession resembles a "second line"procession from New Orleans, whose up-beat rhythms invite everyone to dance in the streets rather than the measured pacing of a march. Divertimento ends with a Hoedown, the tradition American folk dance idiom, when the band has the opportunity for both vivacity and virtuosity and may play as fast as it can. It is important to play all four movements with precision, clarity and, most importantly, enthusiasm.
