The Colorado Mesa University Wind Symphony, under direction of Dr. Calvin Hofer, has hosted the annual and continually growing Best of the West Music Festival. In 2007, Ewazen was guest composer and commissioned for a new concert band work to celebrate Grand Junction and the towering Grand Mesa that rises above the town. Inspired by this grand landscape, I set out to write a work which was rich, resonant, colorful and bold, a tribute to this amazing scenery which I ultimately had the pleasure of seeing and exploring first hand. Composed in honor of the memory of Ray Wofford who directed the high school band in Wilmington, Ohio, for many years. His commitment to young musicians was legendary and the dramatic and majestic opening pays tribute to a life well-lived by a man who gave so much to his students. Fragments of his favorite hymn, Amazing Grace, are used throughout before the final and exhilarating close brings about a sense of joy celebrating the personality and energy he dedicated to the teaching profession.

Always With Grace, commissioned by the Lloyd C. Bird High School band, includes references to Amazing Grace. Not meant to be an arrangement of this wonderful melody, it is instead a tribute to this favorite hymn. From the opening bars of driving eighth-note rhythms through the solemn and lyric middle section, the concept of "time moving forward" is represented by numerous musical devices. As the composition concludes, the full hymn is heard while an off-stage saxophone quartet and metallic percussion sounds "tick away" to an intriguing, unique conclusion.

Bright Shining as the Sun was commissioned by the Poplar Bluff, Missouri High School Band in honor of Kyle Dicken, who perished while trying to save his younger brother from a tragic house fire. As a band member, Kyle played the tuba and trombone and was a dedicated and popular member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Marching Band. The hymn tune Amazing Grace is used throughout the work, both as a motive during the fast sections and in its entirety during the expressive middle section. As a tribute to his memory this work was played by members of the Poplar Bluff Band at Kyles memorial service.

Warm, emotional, and harmonically rich, the lovely tune Ballerma comes from the shaped note book of hymns entitled The Southern Harmony and is similar to the well-known hymn Amazing Grace. Its the perfect subject for the collection of colorful and creative fantasies that make up this work. After an initial presentation, the melody is used in a series of contrasting treatments, the first being flippant and humorous. The next is simple and childlike, featuring a delicate percussion ensemble, clarinet ensemble or combination of both. The final fantasy incessantly drives the music forward, releasing pent-up energy along the way to the thrilling conclusion.

£168.50Spirit of the Sequoia - Philip Sparke
When Philip Sparke composed this piece he tried to create a work that characterised man's ability to overcome personal tragedy and the feeling of serenity gained when the tragedy is forgotten. To do this he decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat, such as a ferocious forest fire to re-grow. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict,catharsis, inner calm and finally triumph. A fantasic new major concert work from the pen of Philip Sparke.
