Three Dances From The Maid Of Orleans - Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

This fine addition to the Bourgeois Editions is from Tchaikovskys grand opera, The Maid of Orleans. Based on the story of Joan of Arc, the three movements can be performed together, or the first and last dances can stand alone in performance as well. Movements include: Dance of the Bohemians - a bright and lively display of virtuosity; Dance of the Pages - an elegant minuet scored for chamber winds; and Dance of the Actors - a fiery and robust finale ideal for any performance. Its a brilliant showcase for upper-level ensembles.

Voyage to the Moon - Jacques Offenbach

Jacques Offenbachs operetta Voyage to the Moon tells the enchanting story of a prince that sets out on an adventure to travel to the moon. Premiered in Paris in October of 1875, the production was loosely based on the popular Jules Verne novel From the Earth to the Moon and spared no expense in making it a major theatrical event. This lively and exuberant overture contains various themes from the operetta including a beautifully lyric horn solo before concluding with a brilliant cancan-like presto that Offenbach is famous for. The musical flair and dance-like exuberance brilliantly reflect the grand spectacle of the stage presentation.

Scherzo: Cat and Mouse - Robert Spittal

The "cat and mouse chase" has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. In this spirit of playfulness and suspense, Robert Spittal has created a marvelous work that is both entertaining and exhilarating.

Aunt Rhodie's Diet - Joseph Compello

Aunt Rhodie's Diet is a sequel to the incredibly popular Aunt Rhodie's Appetite. Both arrangements are novel settings in which a beginning band can perform the standard folk songs found in the first few pages of most band methods. Because they are so easy to play, these arrangements by themselves would not make much of a concert, even for a beginning group. However, when used as incidental music to the story, the songs become sufficiently interesting to the audience, without taxing the capabilities of students who have only been playing for about 10 to 12 weeks.

As We Search - Joseph Earp

This programmatic composition, inspired by the many ghost stories that have come from the mysterious occurrence of lights on Brown Mountain, North Carolina, musically tells the story of a missing 19th-centurywoman that is searched for every night by villagers. Using exposed instrumental lines, a developing three-note theme, and contemporary harmonic and percussive elements, this composition for mature concert bands is a great choice for contest or as a unique and different programing contrasting selection.

    Early One Morning

Although the roots of this British folksong date back to the 18th century, the first publication of the melody was in the late 1850's in the collection "National English Airs". Early One Morning is the story of a young woman misused by her lover, as overheard by the singer. In the mid-1930's the tune was adapted as a military slow march called "The Globe and Laurel" for the Royal Marines band. This arrangement focuses on the lyricism of the original with just a hint of its later military associations. Only the 1st clarinets cross the break. 1st trumpet's highest note is F.

    Fra Diavolo

The French composer Daniel Franois Esprit Auber (1782-1871) witnessed many important developments in the history of music ? from Luigi Cherubini to Richard Wagner. His extensive output consisted mainly of operas, but unfortunately today only two of these are still well known, including the comic opera Fra Diavolo. The story concerns Fra Diavolo, a famous Italian bandit and soldier from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and is one of crime, lust and treachery. The overture has a classical structure and is filled with striking themes and motifs and has a particularly unusual introduction (for the time) with the snare drum taking the leading role!

The end brings back the energy of the clipper ships as they race toward a heroic ending. This one is sure to have instant appeal!

    Family Fugue - Timothy Loest

Inspired by Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, Family Fugue uses a narrator to blend the familiar folk song Frere Jacques with a delightful story line of the misadventures of three characters: Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion. An educational gem, this innovative work is ideal for teaching major and minor tonality, melodic retrograde, dynamic contrast, and of course, fugue form. Consider using a school administrator or local celebrity as your narrator. Easy to put together, great for recruiting, and forever memorable! (4:24)
