A suite in 3 parts based on the story of a young boy who was abducted by a Shawnee Indian hunting party in 1771. The first movement, "The New Frontier" is a bold and majestic section containing the patented Swearingen melodic themes which have made his music so popular. "Bring Back My Child" is a solemn section which includes some sorrowful chanting(optional) by members of the band and some very expressive solo spots for the 1st Clarinet and Flute. The third movement, "Great Chief" has a bright and rhythmic character bringing the suite to a dramatic and exciting climax.

Scaff! is an adaptation of the famous 4th movement of the Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz in swing style. The story of the March to the Scaffold is a tragic one where the subject, in a depressive state over a love interest, overdoses on opium. He dreams that he has killed his beloved and after his procession to the scaffold is now witnessing his own death. This arrangement doesn't really reflect those tragic circumstances but instead redresses this great tune into a toe-tapping big band number.

The music depicts the intensity and exertion of a legendary contest between John Henry and a new steam powered machine, which he ultimately won. A three-note motif represents Henry as the music moves through dramatic character and tempo changes, including a moment for the entire band to sing!
