Hymn to the Sun - Satoshi Yagisawa
Commissioned by Tokai City Wind Music Band for their 40th anniversary celebration. The y gave the composer a difficult theme, that is: For 40 years we did our activity as if we were a family. We had new experiences, welcoming new members, supporting and help ing one another, sometimes having troubles. Through these experiences, the band became our Sun. With the piece, we would like to express our enthusiusm of progress, taking over the early members' will. The composer used to join in a school band, so he stron gly agreed with the theme, but composing is another hard thing to do. He decided to dr op on the band almost everytime he went to Nagoya, and promoted friendship with them, which led him copose this piece.

Layering two songs which speak to the idea of searching for something beyond your current situation, this is an excellent piece for teaching an ensemble to blend so they can hear each other and not be individually heard. Using 900 Miles and The Wayfaring Stranger for compositional material, thematic elements from both are interwoven into the overall musical fabric. 900 Miles' lonely railroad worker is heard in woodwind train whistle effects and the homesickness of The Wayfaring Stranger, as heard in the movie "1917", is effectively portrayed by a moving treatment using long tones with a continuing rhythmic accompaniment. A strong concert, contest or festival choice, this work offers cross-curricular opportunities as well.

James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. This scintillating work was written as a tribute to the jazz musicians of the New Orleans, Dixieland and Chicago styles of the 20s and 30s. It consists of an opening swing section in true Dixieland style, followed by a sleazy blues section. Ideally the band should be divided so there is a separate Dixieland band consisting of trumpet, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trombone, banjo (optional) and tuba or double bass. Although the Dixieland band are mostly accompanied by the remainder of the concert band the accompanying players also get the chance to shine as every now and again they take over the musical themes.

The canal was named after the Baron, as was the nearby village. Sonata for Clarinet No.2 in Eb - Score and Parts - Johannes Brahms
This clarinet sonata was composed in 1894 for clarinetist Richard Mu?hlfeld. This was an interesting time in Brahms' life as he vowed he would retire from composing in 1890 but after he heard a performance of the Weber clarinet concerto No.1 and the Mozart clarinet quintet he so admired the soloist that he felt he should come out of retirement and compose 2 clarinet sonatas for him. These were completed in 1894 and first performed in a private concert in September of that year. These 2 sonatas were the last chamber pieces he composed before his death.
