Modern wind music in the style of the great Big Bands was the model for the composition Band Fever by Otto M. Schwarz. It was written on commission of the prestigious South Tyrolese concert band, Symphonic Winds. The piece features two soloists, one saxophone and one flugel. Rhythms like Hip Hop Style and Double Samba support a catchy melody, which is later taken up by the full band, forming the basis for the above-mentioned soloists' improvisations. A unique work in the world of wind music, Band Fever allows both soloists and conductor to display individuality and creativity. Costa del Sol
"Costa Del Sol" (Coast of the Sun) creates a musical panorama of the beautiful Mediterranean coastline of the M?laga province in southern Spain. Based upon series of chord progressions common to generations of Spanish flamenco guitarist, David Shaffer has crafted a spirited and beautiful setting of three authentic Spanish folk dance forms, the Corrida, Jota and the Fandango. This energetic and captivating composition opens with a fiery statement reminiscent of the traditional Spanish bullfights. A quick folk dance in ? (Jota) follows, utilizing traditional Spanish percussion. The middle section is introduced with a lush alto saxophone solo leading into a lyrical folk dance (Fandango). The fiery Jota returns in two separate but distinct forms to conclude the piece. This was an interesting time in Brahms' life as he vowed he would retire from composing in 1890 but after he heard a performance of the Weber clarinet concerto no. 1 and the Mozart clarinet quintet he so admired the soloist that he felt he should come out of retirement and compose 2 clarinet sonatas for him. These were completed in 1894 and first performed in a private concert in September of that year. These 2 sonatas were the last chamber pieces he composed before his death.
