Klezmer music originated in the 'shtetl' (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as 'klezmorim', had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the 'badkhn' (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the 'Purimshpil' (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. Commissioned as a tribute to the Fire Department of New York City, this immensely moving work was premiered at an emotional performance for the firefighters in Manhattan this past March. The composition opens with a striking brass fanfare accompanied by woodwind flourishes. A sensitive treatment of the melody from America (My Country, 'Tis Of Thee) follows using haunting vocal colors (cued in F Horns). The nation in turmoil is depicted in an intensely driving and powerful section which evolves marvelously into a full-blown treatment of America with chorus and band. A truly magnificent musical tribute to the heroes of 9/11.
