The Quest - Bert Appermont
Quest implies "exploring" or "being in search of". This four piece work is a challenge to every fanfare or symphonic wind band. All groups in the orchestra have explicit parts in this composition that is reminiscent of film music. It can serve both for a concert and a contest.

Suite - Boudewijn Cox
Suite for symphonic wind band is a rich orchestral piece that taxes the musicians to the utmost. The first part starts with a lyric melody in the French horn section, to be taken over by the full orchestra, ending in a kind of "anarchistic entrada". The second part starts with a transparently orchestrated polyphonic web, slowly passing into a richly arranged wave like movement that stops suddenly, leading to the third part's "attaca" start. This third part is a fragile "adagio con tenerezza". The finale is extremely virtuous and feriocious. It is a musical expression of anger, fear and despair.

Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

This reworked edition of the Folksong Suite by Antal Farkas will help to widen the repertoire of youth ensembles and adult amateur orchestras.
