Poem for Flute and Concert Band - Charles Tomlinson Griffes

Poem, originally for flute and piano, composed by Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884 - 1920). This wind ensemble arrangement is designed to make this composition playable by most high school clarinetists and instrumentalists. Please note that the B-flat instruments are written with a key signature of 3 flats, not one of six sharps. This was done to keep the clarinets playing in a familiar key with ample accidentals to ease the reading of the parts. The bass clarinets and the bassoons play identical parts and can be substituted or augmented as desired. Though a minimum of two double bassists is ideal, an alternate part for tuba is also provided (also divisi).

    Encore! - Goto Yo

Encore! was commissioned by Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010. The commissioning request was that the piece be fun and appropriate as an encore. I made it simple and enjoyable for everyone. The only thing I added was an appealing introduction so each entering section might feel the importance of their instrument. That's why there is a specified appearance order involving standing. It goes from 1) clarinets, 2) piccolo, flute, horn, oboe and bassoon, 3) percussion, 4) euphonium, tuba and double bass, 5) trombone, 6) saxophone to 7) trumpet. Lastly, all sections stand up together and greet the audience. Technically, it's a medium grade level. There are substitutions for bands lacking oboe, bassoon or double bass. The title was selecting hoping for a fun, grand finale. It also means "more" and "again." My hope is for performers and audience to enjoy music, and for Ishikawa Prefecture Band Association to nourish its band movements and activities. I could not ask for more if people come to love music even more by experiencing this work.(Yo Goto)

Five Elizabethan Dances from 'Romeo & Juliet' - Don Freund

Five Elizabethan Dances is drawn from the music that sets the scene and provides the accompaniment for the Ballroom Scene from Don Freund's Romeo and Juliet: A Shakespearean Music Drama for singing actors and piano. The style of the dances is freely drawn from dances found in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (music from ca. 1562 to 1612), spiced up with changing meters and chromatic twists of melody and harmony reflecting a more recent musical language. Each of the dances represents a pivotal scene-within-a-scene. Excludes part doubling: 2+1.2+EH(opt).3+EbCl+BCl+CltoCl(opt).2+Cbsn(opt): AATB Saxes: 3.4.3.2Euph.2 Tuba: Perc(5)

Concerto for Wind Ensemble - Karel Husa

Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band, this three movement work by Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. A note from thecomposer: 'Divided into three movements, this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement, the Brass section concertises in groupsof four Brass quintets (2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba or Baritone), spread from left to right in back. The Saxophones (SATB) are placed in front of the Brass quintets, and the Woodwinds occupy the front of the stage, withPercussion on the left and right side. These groups, like the Brass quintets, play in the concertante style, particularly in the first and last movements. 'At the same time, each movement contains individual solo passages(for example, Timpani and Flute in Movement I - Drum Ceremony and English Horn and other low Woodwinds in Movement II - Elegy). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of Wind and Percussion players today, andby the incredible growth of Wind ensembles, orchestras, and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.'

    Big Bass - Scott Rogers

Every beginning low brass player deserves a big bassline. With a rhythmic focus on quarter- and eighth notes and a range of a fourth, this piece is easily accessible for all beginning low brass players - and mastery breeds motivation, and that's something young musicians on trombone, baritone and tuba need. There is also a short chromatic motive that appears at B. This is written to lie well on the slide and valves and can be a good way to teach the important difference between concert E and Eb.
