Divertimento is an outstanding composition by Roger Boutry for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra. This great work is really nice to play and will enlighten the audience. The Orchestracomposition required is: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Bassoons, 2 small Clarinets, Clarinet I, Clarinet II, 1 Bass Clarinet, 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, 1 Baritone Saxophone, 4 Horns, 4 Bb or C Trumpets, 4 Trombone or 3Trombone and an Euphonium, 1 Bb or C Bass, 1 Double Bass, 1 Harp, Timpani, Drum and a Celesta. It is divided into three parts: I. "Allegro ma non troppo", is strongly rhythmic and syncopated.Itincludes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone and is written as a tribute to Jazz music. II. "Andante", also includes a Cadenza by the Solo Saxophone but at the end of the section. It is reminiscent of slowerblues ballads. III. This part features few sections by the Solo Saxophone but is specially highlighted its ending, in a bright and fast finale. This volume features the score and parts for all theinstruments. Born in France in 1932, Roger Boutry received numerous prizes, including those for Piano, Composition and Conducting. He received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1954. His career was quite successful,alternating between Harmony professor, composer and conductor. He also received numerous prizes for his incredible compositions.

£129.99Aquarium - Johan de Meij
The Suite 'Aquarium' is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes, each of them represented by a motif, and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra, Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured, frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements.The Electric Eel in fact is not represented by a motif, but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish, which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison, getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges, this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone), but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more, after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.

This "Grand Overture" was commissioned by the "Nagano Community Band" - Japan- on occasion of its jubilee in 1992 and is dedicated to the band's conductor, Ikuo Inagaki.The work is based upon three main themes, each symbolising a certain theme. The first part is characterized by its bright themes played mainly by the brass, accompanied by the woodwinds and festive percussion. This part symbolizes the jubilee which is the origin of the composition. This is followed by a bouncing allegro, in which each register of the band displays brilliant techniques. Especially the woodwinds come to the fore! This movement depicts the industriousness and enthousiasm shown by the members of the"Nagano Community Band" in the carrying out of their hobby. A third, main theme, is choral-like in character and is displayed both in the (soft) brass as well as in the warm medium register of the reeds. Here, nature's beaty in and around the city of Nagano is musically celebrated. Following a "chamber-music episode" (featuring the flute, oboe, clarinet, alto-saxophone and horn) the initial allegro re-occurs, weaving its way towards a grandiose finale, in which the two previous themes are once again apparent. Due to its very colourful scoring and the enormous diversity of musical thoughts and ideas, this composition is a fascinating and memorable piece, worthy a jubilee overture!

The book Gullivers Travels (1726) by author Jonathan Swift formed the provocation for writing this composition. Even though this composition isnt a literal representation of the original story, a number of elements were still retained. The shipsdoctor Gulliver finds himself in 4 (fictive) areas, each with their own inhabitants and customs. Each part of this suite also received the name of one of these areas:I. Lilliput The enterprising Lilliputians are represented by a playful, common themein the first part.II. BrobdingnagIn the land of "Brobdingnag" Gulliver is carried off by gigantic giants, which you hear approaching with the sounds of the bassinstruments. The same theme is constantly repeated and quickened in order to increase thetension.III. LaputaLaputa is an island that floats in the air; its inhabitants are strange people with slanting heads. The dreamy, special atmosphere is especially well conveyed here.IV. The HouyhnhnmsFinally Gulliver finds himself in the land of theHouyhnhnms, where intelligent and noble horses rule over the primitive, undeveloped people (yahoos). The trumpets in the brilliant opening express the galloping horses; the gallant theme that follows (horns and trombones) symbolises the primitiveyahoos. The whole composition ends with a big finale.I intentionally tried to limit the degree of difficulty of Gullivers Travels. Despite this I think that this work can appeal to many orchestras due to the colourful orchestration (cues areprovided where needed), the simple and clear theme and the highly imaginative breeding ground of a beautiful story around which this composition is built."

(Recorded on QPRM150D, CHIVALRY, Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra) PARTITA FOR CONCERT BAND is cast in four movements: Introit - begins majestically with brass, saxes and percussion carrying the main theme from which most of the following ideas originate. It is repeated by the woodwinds and moves via a solo side drum into the piu mosso. New ideas are introduced by trombones, the horns and euphoniums leading to the central idea played by oboe. This leads, in turn, via full band to the closing movement. 2. Impromptu -once again the opening theme is the basis of the whole movement, using most of the composer's tricks, augmentation, retrograde, inversion and fugato, it moves along in a very confident style. A muted solo trumpet links into the third movement. Elegy (26/12/04) - this movement was prompted by the devastating events of Boxing Day 2004, the Asian Tsunami. The movement opens bleakly until a solo flute gives us the main theme over a troubled accompaniment. The opening mood returns but timpani and tam-tam herald return of the main theme for the full band. The opening theme is heard again as the music subsides but never settles. Finale - this spirited 6/8 vivo opens up with percussion and horns and trumpets announce the main idea, punctuated with short chords from the lower band. A new four bar theme is heard over a bass tread, the theme overlaps itself and quavers swirl up and down the band. Material from the first movement is heard transformed by the energy of the finale and the music surges towards a sudden close. Performance time: 15:35
