£159.60Variations on a Japanese Folksong - Henk van Lijnschooten
The pentatonic, so characteristic of Japanese folk music, plays an important role in this work. After a short introduction, we hear the theme, which subsequently undergoes a number of metamorphoses. Sometime, the original theme gives way to other folk song elements. Towards the end, a new theme appears - a little Japanes dance tune - played by flutes and clarinets. Yet another theme arises from this. In the finale, the three themes come together, and finally the main theme predominates.

£214.80Figures Sonores - Henk Badings
Figures Sonores was composed in 1984 at the request of the World Music Contest Kerkrade. It was used as test piece in the 'concert division' at the 1985 contest. The board of the WMC asked Badings to write a new type of test piece, stressing the musical contents and its delivery rather than technical difficulties. Moreover the composition was not to exceed a duration of ten minutes. The latter really disturbed the composer as he felt he could not really develop completely his musical ideas. The three parts are played without any interruption. The lyrical, pathetical first part is followed by a solemn middle part in which the percussion has a preponderant role, and a virtuoso and whimsical finale concludes the work. According to the commission the musical expression dominates in all solo passages, that occur in all instrumental groups.

£186.20Wald Sinfonie - Kees Vlak
It was during his stay at Freiburg, Germany, where he was attending a Music Festival, that Kees Vlak found his inspiration for this romantic work. At this festival he was awarded a prize for one of his compostitions, which was played by several bands from different countries. The composer was staying in the small village of Horben, hidden among pine woods on a mountain at the border of the Black Forest. From the balcony of his room he had a splendid view on the Schawinsland Valley, scarcely hidden by the tops of the huge pines. Each morning a blackbird singin in a huge pine next to his window woke him up. This bird song opens the composition.Whenever possible the composer and his wife went for a walk in the Black Rorest. The rediscovery of this wonderful area is expressed by the steadily increasing number of tone colours, used in the orchestration. Each village still boasts its own folk music and dances. More than one hundred bands were playing all around; the Black Forest seemed to be the scene of one huge festival. The image of the Black Forest is also linked to that of hunting scenes, so the next theme is being introduced by hunting horn themes. The second theme paints the lake "Titisee". At first the lake is very calm, but a stiff breeze sets both water and music alike in motion. The small town of Titisee is very popular with tourists and is famous for its woodcutting, its clockworks and musical boxes. It is a popular folk tune, played by a musical box that makes the link with the next theme. The joy and cheerfulness of the dancing village people is expressed by a movement which works out the initial theme. On leaving the little town, one can hear once more the hunting music from the wood as well as the song of the birds. The new theme is againg closely linke d to the hunt and played by the typical German helicon-like euphoniums.this theme interacts with the wecond theme and the word ends with a grnd finale meant as a musical hommage tot this wonderful area.

£186.20Remerciements - Serge Lancen
Remerciements' (Thanksgivings) is the fourth religious composi-tion by Serge Lancen. It is a song of praise and thanksgiving, piously devoted to God. As the composer is very happy to live here on earth he wants to express this happiness in his musical language, accompanied by a text glorifying our Creator. The work is written for symphonic band. The text, quoted from or inspired by Psalms and prayers, can either be recited in whatever language or sung in French by a baritone or mezzo-soprano, accompanied by a harp or an organ. There is the 'Sign of the cross' which can be heard up to 12 times. The work consists of five movements: the first one is a call for prayer. In the second one the composer expresses his Thanksgivings to God. This movement is taken from Lancen's 'Pome Oecumnique' (1975) then sung by a soprano accompanied by symphony orchestra. Now it is only played by the band. The third movement is a homage to God using the theme of the 'Benedicamus Domino', dating from the tenth century and already quoted in the introduction. The fourth movement is serious and moving, it implores the beloved ones who have left us. The finale glorifies God. Hallelujah.

£116.40Suite de Salon - Henk van Lijnschooten
Commissioned by the NIB, the Dutch Wind Music Institute, with the financial support of the 'Fonds voor de scheppende Toonkunst'.CommentaryThis suite brings us back to the 18th century when an important part of the musical life took place in the salons, the favorite quarters of monarchs and important people. There is a ball and we can hear the music in four successive short movements.1. Entree. After an opening fanfare we see the solemn reception of the guests. The composer uses some 17th century musical principles such as the echo dynamics.2. Invitation a la Danse. The guests proceed to the ballroom and are officially introduced. This movement has a 'classical' character.3. Chiaconna. A solemn dance of Spanish origin with a single theme that is repeated with different embellishments and accompaniments.4. Danse Finale. A cheerful dance announces the departure of the guests, but, for sure, the feast will have lasted much longer than this suite.
