£186.20Highlights from Chess - Benny Andersson
The composers of the musical Chess, Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus, as well as the lyricist Tim Rice had already had a very successful career before they started this huge project. Andersson and Ulvaeus had been the male singers of the popular Swedish group ABBA, whereas Tim Rice had written the lyrics for Lloyd Webber's musicals 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Evita'. The plot of the musical is situated in Merano, a small town in Northern Italy, hosting the Chess World Championships. The protagonists are the American titleholder and his Russian challenger, who are adversaries on both the sports and political level. Nowadays the subject is out of date, as Chess was conceived in 1984 when the political scene was completely different. This might be the reason why this musical did not hold out as long as e. g. 'Les Misrables' or 'Cats'. Anyhow the music remained very popular and songs such as 'Last Night in Bangkok', 'I know him so well' and 'Anthem' belong to the standard repertoire of 'musical classics'. In his 'Chess selection' Johan de Meij used the nice orchestral parts of the soundtrack which gave a kind of symphonic character to this musical.

Anthem is the most well known song from the popular musical "CHESS" written by the male half of the Swedish pop group ABBA, Bjoern Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Anthem has been brought out as a separate arrangment (originally found in Highlights from CHESS) and the text for vocal soloist has been added. The arrangment is by none other than Johan de Meij.

Skillfully arranged by master arranger Johan de Meij.

Miss Saigon is a thrilling musical by the duo Boublil and Schnberg, that is also responsable for Les Miserables. It is a modern version of Madame Butterfly. The plot tells the sentimental story of a G.I. Chris who falls in love with a beautiful native girl Kim during the Vietnam War. When he realizes that she is pregnant he has to go back home in the States where his wife is waiting for him. In order to allow the father to educate the child, the young woman commits suicide. With his usual orchestration skill, Johan de Meij made a fine sympho-nic portrait, containing some of the most beautiful songs of the musical. American Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band "The President's Own" and was composed in honour of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favourite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. The performance at Colonel Fettig's final concert with the Marine Band was the world premiere, given at the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois on December 20st, 2023.Duration: 4.15

Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865 - 1931) painted his famous Aino Triptych in 1891, with his own wife Mary as the model. It is inspired by the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic and depicts the story on three panels: The left one is about the first encounter of Vainamoinen and Aino in the forest. The right one depicts mournful Aino weeping on the shore and listening to the call of the mermaids of Vellamo who are playing in the water. The central panel depicts fishing Vainamoinen having thrown away a small fish, which turns out to be Aino, who laughs at him and vanishes forever.Duration: 10.30

The musical Cats, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber is based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. It became Lloyd Webber's third great success, after the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. He began setting Eliot's poems to music in 1977, and the compositions were first presented as a song cycle in 1980. Producer Cameron Mackintosh then recruited director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynne to turn the songs into a complete musical. Cats became one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. It received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The following year, Cats opened at New York's Winter Garden Theatre, its home for the next 18 years, garnering seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show returned to Broadway in 2016, where it had a successful pre-tour run at the Neil Simon Theatre. Cats has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 16 languages, and seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Lloyd Webber's magnificent musical score includes the poignant hit song Memory, which has been recorded by over 150 artists, from Barbra Streisand to Liberace to Barry Manilow. It took 7,486 chandelier crashes for Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera to take over from Cats as the longest-running show in Broadway history in January 2006.Duration: 8.15

They are, by turns, patriotic songs by Adriaen Valerius from the time when our country was occupied by Spain, naughty love songs and a drinking song, Peeckel-Haringh. Songs from the Lowlands was written for the farewell concert of my dear friend Jim Yarnell, who has been the director of bands at The American School of The Hague for four decades. Jim conducted the premire at his final concert, April 8, 2022, and now enjoys a well-deserved retirement.Duration: 12.00Songs from the Lowlands can be performed instrumental or with SATB choir (choral parts available separately).
