This arrangement was made for The Suoni Wind Orchestra of Skien, Norway, and performed for the first time at their Promenade Concert "At Sea" at the Ibsen Culture Center, March 8th 2014, being the final number of the concert. Participating this concert was also the Choir Canto Libre and the two vocal soloists were Eli Kristin Hansveen and Andreas Hoff. Since that time this arrangement has been used also at other concerts involving choir and soloists. It is important that tempo is not too slow and one has to be thorough with details in the percussion parts. (Mahler over zijn 2de symfonie "Wederopstanding", Juli 1894)*"You are clubbed to the ground and then lifted to the highest heights on angels' wings"Commissioned by and dedicated to Concertband Maasmechelen (BE), conducted by Mark Prils.Kevin Houben was inspired for this work by Gustav Mahler's 2nd symphony, better known as the Resurrection symphony.The work can be regarded as a Ma(h)lerei of various compositional and spherical elements that refer to the Austrian composer but that appear in this composition in an embedded, contemporary way.As Mahler often drew his inspiration from nature, the opening of this piece brings nature right to the audience. The work starts with a solo for alto flute accompanied by a pedal note in four octaves with harmonic responses echoing the solo.From the start, Kevin Houben provides Mahler's material with a contemporary touch. He replaces the nature sounds that Mahler uses (perfect fourth) with tritone intervals. The off stage trumpet signals have been preserved but are provided with a new accompaniment. Gradually, throughout the work, the orchestra undergoes its own independent development. Mahler's musical signature remains recognizable, but Kevin Houben allows it - e.g. through the use of various timbres - to flourish in a more modern musical idiom, which characterizes numerous contemporary compositions for wind band (cfr. Where Angels Fly).The work comes to a grandiose end with a passage of the famous chorale from Mahler's 2nd symphony. The rich orchestration of this chorale gives the listener the illusion of the presence of a choir and organ without actually using them.In Resurrection, each instrument group comes into its own: in solo fragments, in transparent thematic passages or in splendid tuttis. Therefore, the work forms an interesting challenge for a wind band on several levels, both technically and melodically - the latter due to the long suspenseful melodic phrases that the musical structure requires.The piece is accessible to a wide audience and can be regarded as an enrichment for any concert programme. Resurrection takes the audience through various atmospheres and experiences: from stunning to chilling, from calming to delighting...Die Musik muss immer ein Sehnen enthalten, ein Sehnen ber die Dinge dieser Welt hinaus." The German composer Joseph Ignaz Schnabel (1767-1831) was a descendant of a musical family. During his lifetime he occupied several musical posts including Violinist, Organist, Concertmaster, Conductor, Music Teacher and managing director of the Royal Institute for Church Music. Schnabel composed masses, hymns, vespers, military music and a clarinet concerto. His choir work Transeamus usque Bethlehem is still widely performed and Wil van der Beek has produced this excellent arrangement for concert band which does justice to the original.

£118.99Goodnight Moon - Eric Whitacre
Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Somewhere around reading number 500, I began hearing little musical fragments as I read, and over time those fragments began toblossom into a simple, sweet lullaby. I knew it was a long shot, but I asked my manager, Claire Long, to contact HarperCollins and see if they would allow the text to be set to music. To my surprise and delight they agreed - thefirst time they had ever allowed Goodnight Moon to be used in such a way. I composed the piece relatively quickly, originally setting the text for harp, string orchestra, and my son's mother, soprano Hila Plitmann. I laterarranged Goodnight Moon for SATB choir and piano. More recently, my dear friend Verena Msenbichler-Bryant arranged the piece for wind ensemble and soloist. The melody of Goodnight Moon will forever make me think of those quietnights, reading my son to sleep. -Eric Whitacre

At the heart of this piece are several elements that inspired the composer. First of all: nature, infinite and inexhaustible, giving life and power, something bigger than humans can grasp. The composer used the Gregorian hymn 'Veni Creator Spiritus' as a leitmotiv to reflect this idea. A second element was the passing of David Maslanka, a dear friend of the composer, honoured in the work by a few musical 'echoes'. At the end of the work, there is a passage for optional choir in different possible settings. The Source was commissioned by the Banda Giovanlie Regionale ANBIMA FVG, Italy, and is an impressive, stirring and moving piece of music.
