£132.95MUSIC FOR AROSA (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. (Grade 5) Performance time 11'01" (Recorded on QPRM138D BREAKING THE CENTURY, Central Band of the Royal Air Force)

Red Lines (CB) - Stijn Aertgeerts
Red Lines was commissioned by the Swiss Army Brass Band and their conductor Philipp Werlen. The title is a reference to their very distinctive black uniforms with Red vertical lines. Switzerland is a country with a tremendously rich brass band culture and have some of the best bands in the world. The individual level of musicians is also of incredibly high quality. The work begins very bombastically with continuous 8th notes. This immediately sets the drive for the entire first movement where the low brass and woodwinds can also show off huge sounds several times. It culminates in a grand tutti before the music calms down in the second movement where the euphonium can show its solistic qualities and the band can show a big difference in dynamics and sound. The final movement is driven by the drums and timpani that provide a solid boost to keep moving the thematic material forward in the band and through the percussion solo a big build-up to a glorious finale.

£57.00Many Moons
A poignant balladic description of a memory of a New Mexico night sky, this lyrical piece encapsulates the feeling of wonder and humility felt when we stare out at a sky seemingly filled with hundreds of little moons. Beginning with subtle percussion and a cross-cued euphonium solo, a wistful theme is developed and passed throughout the ensemble. Multiple expressive demands related to phrasing, balance, listening, and tone let you teach these in a composition that sounds harder than it is. Use this ballad as a contrast to your opener in concert or as a second selection in festival or contest performances.

£184.00Chasing Light - Harrie Janssen
Chasing Light is a one-part composition in 3 movements. The work opens with a slow introduction, dark in atmosphere, in which the main thematic ingredients are exhibited. This is followed by a fast movement, Chasing Light, in which previously heard thematic material is incorporated. Characteristic of this middle movement is the driving motoric movement that galvanises the aforementioned hunt. An extended Euphonium solo bridges the gap to the final movement. Here ethereal sounds dominate. Harp and Mallets dominate the soundscape, symbolising the light that has finally been achieved. The title Chasing Light can be seen as a metaphor for striving to solve major problems facing the world today, such as the Corona pandemic and the climate problem, among others.Chasing Light was composed on behalf of Stadsfanfaren Izegem, conducted by Hans Demeurisse for the World Music Contest 2022 in Kerkrade.

£144.99Serenata - Jan Van der Roost
While composing Serenata, Jan Van der Roost didn't focus too much on virtuosity, acrobatics or spectacle. Instead, he wanted to let the solo instrument shine as a melodic and expressive voice. And indeed: the warm sound of the euphonium touches the heart of the audience straight away in the first section with a melodious theme. Then follows a rigaudon, a noble and elegant dance from the Renaissance era. Despite the fact that some of the variations on the main theme require some technique and agility, the overall character mostly remains songful. The composition as a whole builds further on these two musical ingredients, but thanks to a clever alternation of melodic and technical passages, it offers a nice stylistic diversity to the listeners. The band is definitely not 'just accompanying' but fully participates and begins a dialogue with the soloist: both musical partners have their say. The end is more spectacular and sonorous, giving an extra boost of energy to the soloist as well as the band in a grand finale!
