Taking the Fifth - Peter Meechan
Written during the Covid-19 pandemic, originally as an adaptable chart, Taking the Fifth takes its title from both the primary interval of the work as well as from a general British expression that when something is outrageous, remarkable, or the worse of its kind that it "takes the biscuit".Given that the piece was written during the Covid-19, and that even more unpredictable news that followed every day during the pandemic, it seemed an apt title!Upbeat, occasionally dark, but always with drive and a sense of fun, Taking the Fifth was the piece that got my creative juices flowing again, having initially found myself pretty lost for inspiration during the early stages of pandemic.Taking the Fifth is dedicated to my dear friend, Robert Ambrose.Peter Meechan 2021Anthony Reimer, Calgary, CanadaBenedictine College - Tom Davoren, Director of BandsBrandon University - Wendy Zander McCallum, Conductor, Symphonic BandBrooklyn Wind Symphony - Jeff W. A Jamestown Trilogy is a three-movement suite inspired by the story of Captain John Smith and his crew, who sailed from England on December 20, 1606 in three small ships, the Discovery, Susan Constant and Godspeed. They first landed at Cape Henry on April 26, 1607 and then sailed up the James River where, on May 14, 1607, they landed on a site they named Jamestown.In 1608, Smith was captured by the Powhatan Indians. Legend has it that he was considered a threat to the Indians because of his interest in metals and in searching for a waterway west. Smith was sentenced to death and placed on a stone alter to be killed when a twelve year old Indian Princess rescued him. Matoaka, nicknamed Pocahontas (Playful One), the daughter of Powhatan, chief of the confederacy, threw her body across Smith's and saved his life.Duration: 5.30

Benjamin Franklin's love for the art of music was well documented in American history. Robert W. Smith has selected three musical moments in Ben Franklin's life and created this unique composition for the concert band. Beginning with a setting of "My Plain Country Joan." a song composed as an anniversary gift to his wife, Franklin's jovial personality is evident through the timelessness of his music. The second section is based on Franklin's glass armonica. The delicate and ethereal sounds of this beautiful instrument provide a quiet moment of reflection for all. The finale is based on Franklin's "magic squares." an arrangement of numbers in a square where all rows, columns and diagonals add to the same sum. Robert W. Smith extracted the melody based on the numeric sequence in a 3 x 3 magic square. The resulting musical statement and fugue truly shows the close relationship between mathematics and music. An amazing concept, an amazing cross-curricular piece!

Ghost Band
What happens when the lights go out and the ghosts of musicians past come out to play? They form a "Ghost Band" performing to the delight of your next concert audience! This new novelty piece by Robert W. Smith provides a creative opportunity for all in the band. Beginning with a dark and mysterious introduction featuring vocal effects, the Ghost Band begins with a driving bass line leading to a delightfully haunting melody. The ghosts even enjoy a ghoulish waltz before returning to the final statement. Mr. Smith has included optional performance elements such as costumes and sound effects.
