James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. Recent years have seen his publications of easy flexible ensembles for younger players and now he turns his attention to the wind band. In this series "The Concert Band Collection", he has written exciting new pieces for the standard concert band line up. Attention is given to each instrument so that the technical and musical requirements do not exceed UK Grade 2.5. An optional piano part will provide "stuffing" and moral support for the young players who will quickly enjoy James' catchy and imaginative music. Each volume contains two titles. This one includes "Big Screen Fanfare", a fanfare in the style of a Hollywood movie theme and the cool "Rockbuster".

Rob Wiffin heard this played by the young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason as part of his short recital at the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in May 2018. He was immediately struck by the simple charm of the music and decided to arrange it for band. In doing so he thought it best to just touch it gently rather than over-arrange it. Apart from changes of colour and a little bit of counter-melody the tuneful elegance of the music appears just as in the original solo for violin or ?€cello. The music is attributed to the Austrian composer and musician Maria Theresia von Paradis (May 15, 1759 ?€" February 1, 1824) but, according to Grove Music, this is false and it was possibly composed by violinist Samuel Dushkin (1891-1976), based on Weber's Romanze from his Violin Sonata Op.10, No.1. Whoever it may have been composed by, it is a highly attractive piece.Duration: 2.5

The one-act opera Suor Angelica is set in the cloisters of an Italian convent at the end of the seventeenth century. Of noble birth, Angelica has been a nun for seven years, forced there by her family as punishment for an unknown sin. When her aunt visits her, she tells Angelica that her child had died. This terrible news becomes the reason for her only aria, Senza Mamma, a heart-wrenching song of restraint and dignity to her little 'angel in heaven' (Angelo del Cielo).The set contains solo parts, for soprano voice, cello and a duet for soprano and cello.There is also an optional solo part for trombone or euphonium.Duration: 5.00

The program notes are included for each of the five movements: 1.The first movement refers to the source of the River Thames, with its rippling accompaniment figures. 2.Badminton House is a picture of the world-famous Horse Trials, with an archaic touch here and there to point to the House itself. 3. Pittville Park is the largest open space in Cheltenham, England, with Gustav Holst's birthplace at one end and the famous Pump Room at the other. The composer remembers childhood walks there and varying degrees of catching newts and the like in the central lake. 4. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswold chain, just reaching a thousand feet above sea level at one point, making it, officially, a mountain, albeit a gentle one. Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions. (Note: Some harp parts are doubled, some are more essential. If no harp, the part can be played either by electronic keyboard or piano.)
