Music for Junior Wind Band Vol. 3

Another fabulous arrangement from Adrian Taylor of popular tunes for Junior Wind Ensemble. It is not necessary to have all parts being played for these arrangements. Most will work fine with just the two Trumpet/Clarinet parts and a bass line from trombones, tubas or bassoons. With the exception of the bassoon part, all instruments have a part 1 (more advanced and with key signatures) and a part 2 (easier music, lower notes, rarely crossing the break for woodwind players, and without key signatures for treble clef instruments). A piano part is included to help fill out the harmonies for smaller groups.

The Wind Rises - Joe Hisaishi

This beautiful, lyrical melody is so colorful in the film, without having an imposing image. "The Wind Rises" (2013) does not dominate the visual, and perhaps is an ideal form of film music considering this is director Miyazaki's final production. Chamber ensembles with solos and strings are frequently used in the soundtrack, so the sound is mellow and soft. As you listen more and more, you still recognize the tradition of Ghibli music. When I arrange, I try not to visualize the image of a film. I may think of characters and story line but is it important to write music that alone is appealing and fascinating. Trying not to "overstate" the film is not needed here. If you can bring out the most appealing parts of the soundtrack, excess can be forgiven. Of course, I have not changed the musical elements of the original.I asked Mr. Tomoki Ubata (band director at Ina Gakuen Sr. High School) whom I have worked with numerous times to assist with layout. He came up with a heartwarming medley with two main parts; leading boy Jiro's gift for aeronautical design and his romance with the heroine, Natsuko. The following themes are contained in the arrangement:1. Nahoko (A Rainbow) Beginning2. Caproni (An Aeronautical Designer's Dream) C3. A Journey (An Encounter at Karuizawa) H4. The Falcon I5. Prototype 8 N6. A Journey (A Parting) & A Journey (A Dream of Flight) PIt is quite remarkable, looking back on 30 years of Studio Ghibli's achievements.(Kazuhiro Morita)

New York. Wind band - Nigel Hess

New York- or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come! This piece forms the final movement of 'East Coast Pictures', commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

African Dances. Wind band - Kit Turnbull

African Dances is a continuous work for solo clarinet and wind ensemble consisting of five individual sections. The basis for the piece is the clarinet's construction from the wood of the African blackwood tree, and itssubsequent development into the instrument we know today. Each movement draws on different aspects of Pan-African music, ranging from the styles and forms of the African choral tradition, through to the complex cross-rhythms andpatterns that characterise so much of the music of Africa.

Into The Wind - Carl Strommen

After a bracing and invigorating opening, Carl Strommen's tribute to the nautical culture of his home turf, Long Island, is off and flying. Wind whistles through the sails and the feel of the sea is ever-present in this tuneful and brilliantly scored selection from a master writer of music for band. This is a great way for a polished junior or senior high school band to show off its musical mettle.

The Wind in the Willows - Johan de Meij

"A book for those who keep the spirit of youth alive in them; of life, sunshine, running water, woodlands, dusty roads, winter firesides" said author Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) about his children's book The Wind in the Willows. Initially, he wrote the stories about Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad to read to his visually handicapped son Alistair, but after the publication in book form in 1908, it became a worldwide success. It was later also turned into a film and a television series. What appealed ti the composer most is the friendly, very cosy atmosphere that Grahame has managed to create with his optimistic narrative style full of high spirits, an atmosphere that reminds thecomposer of his own carefree youth. It was therefore a great pleasure to set this book to music! The four movements successively describe:I) The River- The river, which flows through the habitat of the animals like a lifeline, regularly is the scene of pleasant boat trips and picnics. The animals lead their untroubled lives here. The four-tone main motif [A-C-D-C] is extensively presented by the brass section, and returns in the following movements as a countermelody. II) Ratty and Mole -The bright, energetic Rat and the melancholy doubter Mole are inseparable friends and have many adventures. Their opposite characters are illustrated by separate musical themes. III) Mister Toad - The wilful, haughty Mister Toad is indeed a unique case: time after time, he runs into tricky situations, and with his indomitable passion for fast - preferably stolen - cars he causes quite a lot of damage...IV) The Return of UlyssesAfter Toad Hall, the majestic residence of Mister Toad, is recovered from the weasels and stoats of the Wild Wood, who had captured the estate in a cowardly way, our friends get ready for a banquet. They celebrate the victory with a triumphant parade, and so both the book and the music conclude with a happy ending.

Earth, Water, Sun, Wind - Philip Sparke

Earth, Water, Sun, Wind is a four movement work with the unifying theme of these four elements. The music varies from being purely descriptive of the movements' titles to specific sound painting - Earth, for example, is pure music and non programmatic whereas Sun attempts to paint a specific sound picture. The Symphony as a whole concerns itself with man's relationship with these monumental aspects of nature.
