DANCE SUITE (Concert Band) - Muldowney, Dominic

Includes:1. Hey2. Pavane/Waltz3. Polka4. Waltz/Galliard5. Tangos6. Break-DanceDance Suite displays a variety of historical dance forms from a twentieth century viewpoint. The six dances move forward historically from the ancient Hey, through Waltz and Polka, to the sophisticated Tango and the jazz tradition. The rhythm that typifies each dance is constantly under attack, sometimes from a different dance style altogether. These intrusive elements are most obvious in the final dance and prompts the double meaning of the title.I. HEYHey is constructed like a mediaeval motet, where the main blocks of material are rhythmically unconnected to one another. The percussion is the most disconnected of all and seems to have arrived from a Chinese carnival. The scoring alludes to the eight, four and two foot pipes of a baroque organ.I. PAVANE/WALTZAfter a nod in the direction of Dowland's Lachrimae Pavan, the piece seems to wander to and fro between the 16th century and the 19th century world of the Lehr waltz.I. POLKAThe Polka is derived from a four bar fragment found in Stravinsky's sketchbook for The Rite of Spring above which is written: "Dieppe Polka".I. WALTZ/GALLIARDThis is a reversal of the date-shift process in the second movement, in that the wandering goes backwards rather than forwards, particularly to the William Byrd of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.I. TANGOSA slow sentimental tango is sandwiched between an abstract deconstructed one, both of which are developed in Dominic Muldowney's opera The Voluptuous Tango.I. BREAK-DANCEBreak-Dance is the fastest, hardest and strangest movement. Its exuberance fractures the texture, which slowly crumbles midway through the movement, only to be resurrected mirror fashion. The piece is a species of palindrome with no true centre, hence: "Break-Dance".Conductors are free to make a selection from these dances for festival or competition programmes, when limited performance time is available.

An der schonen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube Waltz) has had more success as a concert waltz than in the original choral version: since its victorious performance at the World Exhibition in Paris (1867) it has achieved fame world-wide. In Austria An der schonen blauen Donau has even become an unofficial anthem. At the traditional New Year's concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic, this waltz, along with Radetzky March by Johann Strauss the Elder, is always played as an encore.Duration: 14:30

Gold und Silber - Franz Lehar

"Gold und Silber" ("Gold and Silver") is a famous waltz composed by Franz Lehr in 1902. It was written for a high-society ball in Vienna and quickly became a symbol of imperial Austrian elegance and joie de vivre. With its flowing melodies and lively rhythm, the waltz captures the charm of the Viennese operetta era. Although Lehr is best known for operettas like "The Merry Widow", "Gold und Silber" remains one of his most beloved orchestral works and is still frequently performed in classical concerts around the world. In this arrangement by Andreas Simbeni, the work takes on a fresh sonic character that preserves the magic of the original composition while also introducing new musical accents.

    Regentropfen - Carl Michael Ziehrer

Carl Michael Ziehrer was an Austrian composer best known for his waltzes and marches. One of his lesser-known but still charming works is the "Regentropfen Walzer" ("Raindrop Waltz"). This waltz is characterized by its lively yet gentle melody, which musically reflects the falling raindrops. Ziehrer, who was active in the second half of the 19th century, managed to capture the delicate and ephemeral nature of rain in this piece. The "Regentropfen Walzer" invites the listener to dream and is a beautiful example of the lightness and elegance that characterizes Ziehrer's music.

Belle of the Ball - Leroy Anderson

Like most of Leroy Anderson's efforts, Belle of the Ball is light, effervescent, and devoid of conflict or disharmony. Anderson looked upon the piece as a modern-day American revival -- or revitalization -- of the Viennese waltz tradition. Having said that, the main theme sounds rather unlike a Strauss waltz, but the voice of Tchaikovsky is evident in its playful, fantasy-like character. The melody is rhythmic and comes in short groups of notes, beginning with two notes, then three, then expanding further; the music skates along elegantly. The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson's gentle-belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. This exclusive Southern band edition by Mark Rogers reintroduces Anderson's enchanting work to new generations of audiences.

Festa Paesana - Jacob de Haan

Lunteren, a village on the Veluwe (a wooded region in the Netherlands), sets the scene annually for a village festival dominated by folklore. Festa Paesana (Italian for village festival) is set to music by several folkloric sketches. The theme in Festa Paesana is partly based on a Dutch anthem (Wien Neerlands bloed); when other lyrics are used it is also known as the Lunteren anthem. The work begins with a festive introduction, completed by chimes and drums, in which pieces of the Lunteren anthem are heard. The music then transitions to represent a horse auction. We hear horses run their first rounds in the auction ring while being whipped. The following theme is partly basedon the anthem. The tension of the traditional auction is amplified by an ever-increasing cadence, reaching its climax when the word ?Sold!? is shouted. The night ends with a majestic variation on the Lunteren anthem. The next morning, when the tower clock hits seven times, the village is awaked by the reveille of the heralds. In a fugatic version of the anthem, we can hear the village slowly come to life. This evolves with the chiming of all towers in the village; the celebration can begin. Carriages drawn by horses rumble through the village and thus, it is easy to hear when a horse hesitates or runs amuck. A traditional folk dance group then dances a whirling waltz while the audience shares their pleasure. Musicians march along the scene and take over the waltz theme in their march. Until deep in the night, the musicians are still heard playing in the streets. Meanwhile, we hear the anthem theme being played in a choral variation (in minor). The first time it is played quietly, as a preparation for Sunday. Then it is played in a celebrating way, enabling the devout village residents to remember the past pleasant celebration with satisfaction.
