African Groove (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oswald, Gerald

The expression groove is often used as a term for the various rhythmic styles characteristic of Afro-American music. In fact, pretty much any danceable rhythm is called a groove. This even extends to jazz, a musical genre that originated in African American communities. African Groove will get the audience into the groove, snapping their fingers and even up on their feet.Duration: 3.30

Wind in the Reeds (Bassoon or Baritone Saxophone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Wind in the Reeds was commissioned by Deena Draycott in memory of John Watson, an army bandsman, teacher and bassoonist. Wind in the Reeds is both a tribute and lasting memorial to John. The piece is largely pastoral in nature, evoking images conjured up by the 'play on words' in the title, but includes a faster central section which exploits other aspects of the character of the bassoon. Transitions between the various sections of the piece are achieved through a series of accompanied cadenzas for the soloist. Duration: 6.45

Ascending The Crystal Hill (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ciechomski, Brad

The "Crystal Hill" is the nickname for New Hampshire's Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern USA. Its weather is notoriously fickle, and the world's highest wind speed of 231 m.p.h. was recorded there in 1934. Composer Brad Ciechomski paints a vivid portrait characterizing a climb up the mountain. Soaring melodies and exuberant rhythms depict and intrepid trek.

Macbeth (Fanfare and March) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Walton, William - Noble, Paul

The following program notes are taken from those by Christopher Palmer, the arranger for orchestra from William Walton's incidental music for John Gielgud's production of Macbeth in 1941-42. The music was recorded and taken on tour with the production. Up to now it has remained in manuscript and unknown. Although this piece is called Fanfare and March, the principal march is in fact the banquet music (with its clever suggestion of bagpipes on the woodwind, hence my ad lib parts for extra flutes and oboes). Walton made several different versions of this for dramatic purposes, and here some of them have been pieced together. The central section of Trio is the March (Show) of the Eight Kings (Act 4, Scene 1) which reveals to Macbeth that Banquo's issue, not his, will rule in Scotland.

Winds of Change (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Standridge, Randall D.

In recent years, Oklahoma has seen a great increase in the development of wind energy. This development in sustainable energy sources and the winds that flow across the great state serve as the inspiration for this composition. The piece begins by depicting the great open spaces that stretch for miles across the Oklahoma landscape. Small gusts of wind (represented by scalar and arpeggiated passages in the mallets and woodwinds) dance across the landscape. The piece picks up pace as the wind races across the land, turning the turbines and charging towards the future.Duration: 5:30

Escape from Dead Raider's Hollow (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bell, Jeremy

"Escape from Dead Raider's Hollow" is a fast-paced adventure. Opening quietly, the introduction gradually builds in volume and energy up to a tempo change where the piece takes off and doesn't relent until the end. Combining rhythms of 3 over a pulse of 2 creates a hemiola effect that drives the piece forward, creating a feeling of anxiety and being chased. This is a bombastic, action-packed piece with loud percussive hits, huge brass, and soaring woodwinds that ends with a bang.Duration: 2:45

A Christmas Tale (Narrator with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Standridge, Randall D.

In some European Christmas traditions, Saint Nick (Santa Claus) does not work alone. He travels with the Krampus, a Christmas Devil who doles out punishment to bad boys and girls on Christmas Eve. This work serves as a darkly delightful Christmas piece, intended to educate, entertain, and creep out your audience. The poem Beware the Krampus (written by the composer) helps frame the piece as familiar carols The Ukranian Bell Carol, Up on the Housetop, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, and other holiday favorites are distorted.Duration: 5.15

The Curse of the Mermaid (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas

The Curse of the Mermaid tells the story of a greedy and wealthy fisherman wanting to make money in any way possible. When his business starts to fail, he puts the blame on the mermaids. One day, the fisherman kills a mermaid, who casts a spell on him shortly before she disappears into the water. The composition is in the form of a symphonic poem, starting slow and then mysteriously opening up revealing a fantastic colourful world of sounds and motion. There are various moments during the piece where the composer includes broad and beautiful melodic material, as well as surprising effects and great rhythmical interest. This is a challenging but great piece for concerts or contests! Duration: 11.45
