The Call of the Righteous - Score only - Leslie Condon
Program NotesCall of the Righteous is a tone poem that uses the Gospel song melody "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" as its main theme. An unforgiving opening unison trumpet fanfare leads into the first statement of the tune, which then appears, either in its entirety or in fragments, throughout the piece alongside further thematic material derived from the opening fanfare theme. The reflective central section contains a beautiful original melody, introduced by the clarinet and developed elsewhere, before the music reverts to ideas derived from the opening section, introduced by a recapitulation of the opening fanfare figure, which is further developed to bring the music to a thrilling and dramatic conclusion.Although the music has its creative roots in religious doctrine, it has a lasting and popular appeal that makes it accessible and listenable at every level, with plenty to challenge on both technical and musical levels.

Soliloquies From A Quiet Place - Peter Meechan
soliloquyn."An act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers"During summer 2018 I took a vacation at a family cabin on the banks of Buffalo Pound Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is a beautifully isolated location, which provides for a near perfect view of the night skies. Gradually, as your eyes adjust to the dark, more and more stars reveal themselves to you. Time seems to stop, and you can't help reflecting in every way possible. As insignificant as viewing the heavens like this can make you feel, you also know your fleeting view is a unique moment, a moment you will never see end.One night, having sat outside until the sun began to rise, I went back inside and wrote a short chorale at the piano. It didn't have a place in any piece I was writing at that time but knew those few measures of reflection would find their place in a composition in the future - and it is from those few measures that Soliloquies From A Quiet Place grew.Told through the two trumpet soloists, these are my reflections and thoughts from that night and many others sat gazing in to the heavens.Soliloquies From A Quiet Place was written for soloists Ryan Anthony and Jens Lindemann, conductor Jerry Junkin, and The University of Texas Wind Ensemble. Song of Hope is dedicated to my good friend Ryan Anthony (principal trumpet with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra) and his charity, Cancer Blows - a foundation set up to raise awareness and money to further the research that has helped give their family a hope for a future following Ryan's diagnosis of Multiple MyelomaUpon hearing the middle movement (simply titled "Song") of my cornet concerto, Milestone, Ryan asked me if I could change the end from its current reflective ending to something more uplifting, and to title it Song of Hope, giving it much more meaning than I could have ever imagined.As well as a wind band scoring without soloist, Song of Hope exists with 1, 2 or 3 soloists, accompanied by either wind band, brass band, brass ensemble or symphony orchestra.For my friend Ryan.

Masque - Kenneth Hesketh
A Masque (short for Masquerade) has been defined by Historians as 'A revel in which Mummers or masked folk come with torches blazing into the festive hall and call upon the company to dance and dice' . The chaos of this dramatic dance is depicted in this 'Masque' by Hesketh. The main theme is bravura and is often present, in the background. The form of the piece is a simple scherzo-trio-scherzo. Colourful scoring (upper wind solos, trumpet and horn solos alternating with full bodied tuttis) with a dash of wildness may tease both player and listener to let their hair down a little!Masque has been transcribed for wind band by Kenneth Hesketh from his 'Scherzo for Orchestra', commissioned by the National Children's Orchestra in 1987.

The Winds Of Power - Nigel Hess
Unlike Nigel Hess's other works for wind band, The Winds of Power is not a programmatic work. After a dark and menacing opening a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of a piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form. This is interrupted by a return to the opening mood, with only a brief respite in the form of a chorale for clarinet choir and harp. The theme tries to return once more in a rousing, somewhat cinematic version, but again the sense of foreboding overtakes it. An unsettling march-like section follows before the theme returns in its most lyrical and gentle guise, introduced by solos in the woodwind section. Eventually, a maestoso statement which erupts into a presto coda, ends the journey in a triumphant, more optimistic blaze of sound.
