A Jefferson Portrait (Narrator with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Del Borgo, Elliot

This original composition was inspired by the Declaration of Independence. The narrator revisits excerpts from Thomas Jefferson's words in the document, leaving your audiences in awe. Patriotic by nature, yet contemporary in musical construction, this work will be an outstanding concert closer. Very emotional and highly recommended. Duration: 6.45

Godzilla Eats Las Vegas (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Whitacre, Eric

Note from Composer:It took me seven years to get my bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. By the time I graduated I was ready to eat Las Vegas.Tom Leslie asked me to write another piece for the group as I was leaving, and I thought it would be a blast to do something completely ridiculous. The players are called upon to scream in terror, dress like Elvises (Elvi), and play in about thirty different styles from mambo to cheesy lounge music. The audience follows a script that I wrote simulating a campy, over the top Godzilla movie (is there any other kind?).I wrote the bulk of the piece while in my first year at Juilliard, and no kidding, I used to act out the script every morning devouring animal crackers, wreaking havoc all over the breakfast table. The script was originally twice as long, and had an entire subplot devoted to a young scientist and his love interest. As I started to finish the piece, however, it didn't seem that funny and that story (along with an extended Elvis tribute) ended up on the cutting room floor. The idea that this piece is being played all over the world in such serious concert venues is the single funniest thing I have ever heard. It has been played on the steps of the Capitol by the United States Marine Band, by the Scottish National Wind Symphony (they play in kilts, so help me God), and I have a video of a Japanese audience visibly confused and shaken by the whole experience. Can you imagine? I'm laughing my head off even as I write this!Godzilla Eats Las Vegas! was commissioned by the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Thomas G. Leslie, conductor, and received its premiere November 28th, 1996.The performers are encouraged to go crazy: wear showgirl costumes, Elvis costumes, act out scenes on stage, use video and lighting - anything to get a laugh.

Utopia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning "Nowhereland" and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brass section remind of Wagner's music.Duration: 11:30

Austrian Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Austria is an industrious country. During the last century--which was characterized by extreme changes--the hard-working and ambitious people achieved a great deal, enduring two world wars and numerous political skirmishes. Despite all the problems involved in a change from a dual monarchy to a small state, Austria has found its independence. With his Austrian Overture, Thomas Doss looks toward the future. The first part of the composition provides an optimistic outlook; along with the happiness and energy, some musical humor is also present: while the horns powerfully express joy, small yodeling melodies sound throughout. As the rhythm continues in search of new ways to go, catchy tunes compete to be heard. However, in addition to the energetic, diligent Austria, there's also the quiet landscape where one can enjoy repose and beauty. These aspects - as well as the freedom of spirit and cultural life -are conveyed in the second part of the work through the surprising linking of chords, romantic phrasing, and tender melodies. But life never stands still: creativity, ambition, and work are the driving forces of our existence. Embracing this thought, a reprise of the first part provides a compelling ending. 10:26

Fanfare del Popolo (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Fanfare del Popolo - fanfare of the people - is a reminder of the terrible periods of fascism and dictatorship in world history. It describes a revolution of the oppressed against the tyrant. The people storm the bastions of the dominion and take their fate into their own hands. This fanfare was commissioned by the Symphonic Band Vorarlberg and its conductor Thomas Ludescher. It is dedicated to all people who currently have to live in countries under dictatorship. This item makes an ideal opening work for any concert. 03:15

    Favor and Treasure

Written for an icon in the band world, "Favor And Treasure" honors Col. John Bourgeois, Director Emeritus of the United States Marine Band, past president of the American Bandmasters Association, president of the John Philip Sousa Foundation, American vice president of the International Military Music Society, mentor and friend. "Favor And Treasure" is based on "John's Theme," a bold, original theme conveying inspirational imagery of excellence, artistry and duty congruous with Col. Bourgeois' distinguished career at the helm of the band to which President Thomas Jefferson gave the title "The President's Own." To honor Bourgeois' affinity for Cajun folk music, the old Cajun waltz, "J'ai Passe Devant Ta Porte" is also used, most prominently in the quasi-zydeco section of the work. Musicians and audience members of all ages will be assuredly affected by the spirit and essence of this extraordinary composition.

Floriana Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

It was in the rural setting of this convent with its marvelloaus church that Bruckner composed many of his great symphonies. St. Florian Choral is Thomas Doss' modest tribute to this great master whose music has left its permanent mark on the composer's musical life. 0:03:00
