Cradle of Liberty
Al Hayes was one of seven pseudonyms used by famous march composer Henry Fillmore. Fillmore became so popular and was so prolific in the early part of the 20th century that he had to resort to pennames as to not compete with himself. This is yet another tuneful, well-written march by Fillmore that has been given new life in this setting by arranger Laurie Lafferty. This is the perfect march for use as a festival warm-up that is of a moderate difficulty.

At the heart of this piece are several elements that inspired the composer. First of all: nature, infinite and inexhaustible, giving life and power, something bigger than humans can grasp. The composer used the Gregorian hymn 'Veni Creator Spiritus' as a leitmotiv to reflect this idea. A second element was the passing of David Maslanka, a dear friend of the composer, honoured in the work by a few musical 'echoes'. At the end of the work, there is a passage for optional choir in different possible settings. The Source was commissioned by the Banda Giovanlie Regionale ANBIMA FVG, Italy, and is an impressive, stirring and moving piece of music.

The composer writes:"On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate.It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time".Philip Sparke

This work is not only about the flow of the Doubs, Ranceuse and Roide rivers that converge at Pont-de-Roide but also about the flow of life and history of this French town. The composition begins festively and, after the tempo picks up, the music smoothly and rhythmically depicts the happiness and enthusiasm of the inhabitants. The ever-flowing waters of the rivers introduce the slow, melodic middle section, which suddenly turns into traditional march music. The Eagle's Quest was commissioned by Brevik Musikkorps (Norway) to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Cort Adeler, a renowned Norwegian-Dutch sailor who was born in the town of Brevik in 1622. His Dutch name Adelaer means 'eagle'. This work celebrates his life but is not programmatic, simply reflecting Brevik's pride in one of its most famous sons. Towards the end of the piece there is a brief quotation from the town song, Brevikssangen, which is a fitting and captivating conclusion.
