Go with the Flow - Jacob de Haan

This work is not only about the flow of the Doubs, Ranceuse and Roide rivers that converge at Pont-de-Roide but also about the flow of life and history of this French town. The composition begins festively and, after the tempo picks up, the music smoothly and rhythmically depicts the happiness and enthusiasm of the inhabitants. The ever-flowing waters of the rivers introduce the slow, melodic middle section, which suddenly turns into traditional march music. After a return to sounds of happiness and enthusiasm, the work closes majestically. The optional Car Horn sound (bar 126) can be downloaded from this website, under 'Attachments'.

The Shady Grove - Travis J. Weller

Shady Grove is a folk song that began to be heard in the southern Appalachians around the time of the Civil War. The memorable melody has a distinctively haunting quality that one cant help but be affected by. Many different lyrics exist for the song (some estimate it could be as many as 250), but the central themes are that of longing, love, and friendship. The use of washboard and spoons at one point brings this catchy bluegrass tune to life, helping us connect to this delightful American folk song.

Spirit of the Sequoia - Philip Sparke

When Philip Sparke composed this piece he tried to create a work that characterised man's ability to overcome personal tragedy and the feeling of serenity gained when the tragedy is forgotten. To do this he decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat, such as a ferocious forest fire to re-grow. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict, catharsis, inner calm and finally triumph. A fantasic new major concert work from the pen of Philip Sparke.

The Sound of my Life - Otto M. Schwarz

With this composition, Otto M. Schwarz shows himself totally capable of composing a work with a somber, almost melancholic character. Melody and counterpoint, accompanied by a peaceful harmony, play a kind of question and answer game in this short composition. The piece is written in a rather ABA form, with the perusiion complementing the whole very effectively.

The Heaven Tree - Thierry Deleruyelle

The Heaven Tree is based on the fi rst book in an intensely imagined trilogy by author Edith Pargeter. Set during the golden age of cathedral building, this adventure novel explores the splendour and cruelty of the Middle Ages. Thierry Deleruyelle's work is an ideal accompaniment to the novel. With an obvious sense of suspense, his music helps us get in touch with a distant reality that brings the past to life.
