    Harlequin - Bruce Broughton

Harlequin is the most popular of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte who, although a slow thinker, was acrobatic and nimble - he would never perform a simple action when the addition of a cartwheel or backflip would spice up the movement! These characteristics are aptly portrayed musically in Bruce Broughton's mini concert overture. Originally published for brass band in 1984, this revised version for wind band coveys all the hustle, bustle, and agility of the character in a finely crafted musical structure. Ideal as a concert opener or encore it is sure to delight audiences and provide players with an exciting new addition to their repertory. Duration: 3 minutes USA Grade 4+

    Come, Emmanuel

Come, Emmanuel is based on the traditional Christmas carol O Come, O Come Emmanuel. The piece begins with a beautiful introduction, where moving passages are passed throughout the band over lush harmonies. The main melody, introduced by the clarinets and euphoniums, is then followed by contrasting sections that feature both the woodwind and brass choirs. These sections incorporate unconventional harmonies, creating a rich and varied texture. The piece concludes with the full band on the chorus. Winter Scene (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

A depiction of a cold, snowbound winter scene. This work was written shortly after the composer I finished a little piece called Summer Song. Winter Scene originally started life as a guitar piece but was expanded in several ways when casting it for wind band. Without looking for specific imagery, the composer imagined something like the snowbound scenes found in the Renaissance art of Pieter Breugel the Elder d. 1569. The music begins with some icy dissonance in the brass before the slow processional of the tune is first stated. There is some contrasting material in the middle which changes colour and key before the main theme returns with its slightly acerbic accompaniment.Duration: 3.30
