These are the best times to view the Canyon with the sun low in the sky casting shadows that give depth and form to the vast panorama. Angel's Gate is one of the many named rock formations in the canyon. The composer has tried to depict the sights and sounds of dawn, birdsong in the early morning sky and the gradual revelation of the Canyon itself as sunlight reaches into its rocky depths.Towards the end of the piece, to the sound of a tolling bell, we are however reminded of the dangers that the beauty of the Grand Canyon so cleverly hides.

El Golpe Fatal - Dirk Brossé
With the sound of trumpets and a long drum roll Dirk Bross takes you to the splendour of the opening ceremony of a bullfight! The rhythm and the use of South American percussion instruments convey a festive atmosphere whilst broad lines and bright colours describe the solemn nature of this event. The imaginary bull is received with great acclaim with the full band playing. Two contrasting themes represent the heroic matador and the condemned bull. The audience cheers as the bull collapses and strong final chords round off the triumph of the matador. The final quiet notes give a feeling of melancholy reflecting the sad end of this story.

'Panem et Circenses', Bread and Games were essential for keeping the citizens of ancient Rome in check. While the bread was meant for the poorest among the Romans, the Games were Popular Pastime Number One for everybody.There were different kinds of games, such as chariot races (especially popular with female spectators), or wild-beast fights, where lions, tigers, bulls or bears were set on one another or even on human beings. Most popular, however, were the Gladiator fights. In 'Bread and Games' William Vean depicts one of the many fights in the antique Colosseum. 1. Entrance of the Gladiators: By powerful bugle-calls the attention of the peoplewas asked for, after which the Gladiators entered the Arena at the sound of heroic marching-music.2.Swordfight: We can hear that the fights were not mere child's play in this part.On the contrary, they were a matter of life and death and were fought accordingly.3.Mercy of the Emperor: Sometimes a wounded gladiator could be fortunate, depending on the mercy of the audience. Waving one's handkerchief meant mercy, a turned-down thumb meant no pardon. The Emperor had the right to take the final decision, but he usually complied with the wish of the majority of the public. 4.Lap of Honour: Gladiators were mainly selected among slaves, convicted criminals, or prisoners of war. Consequently, winning was very important, as it would mean fame, honour and sometimes even wealth. A lap of honour, therefore, was the winner's due reward.

These productions, initially conceived for Broadway were soon made into movie-productions and shown all over the world. This has contributed to a considerable degree to make Rodgers' music of everlasting value.South Pacific is set - as may be gathered from the title - on an island in the Pacific Ocean. It is there that the planter Emil de Becque, who has left France, falls in love with Nellie Forbush, a nurse in the U.S. Navy, statione on the island during the raging World War II.After learning the truth about Emil's obscure past (he has comitted murder in his homecountry and he is the father of two children running loose on the island) Nellie starts to doubt the sincerity of their relationship.In the song This Nearly Was Mine, Emil expresses his misgivings on the outcome of their relationship.

Phantom Regiment - Leroy Anderson
This work was written by Leroy Anderson in 1951 and premiered by him when he recorded it for Decca. Interestingly, in 1956 the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Rockford, Illinois changed their original name from the Rockford Rangers after having heard the piece played by a different corps. The music emulates the sound of distant trumpets and soldiers marching, drawing closer to the listener bit by bit. As the music gains strength, the marching and trumpets get louder and after passing the audience, it slowly fades away as they disappear into the distance again. Edelweiss Brass Orchestra is a Japanese concert band based in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1978, the ensemble has grown from musical strength to strength and in 2018 they commissioned a new work with Jan Van der Roost for their 40th anniversary concert. The title Hidamari could loosely be translated as "In the Sunshine". A short quote from the famous musical The Sound of Music (you got it, 'Edelweiss'!) is a subtle nod to the name of the commissioning ensemble. Hidamari reflects the idea that EBO is like a home for all musicians: together, they are one big family.
