Liturgical Music for Band, Opus 33 - Martin Mailman

, was completed in 1963. Since then, the piece has become a landmark work in the band repertoire with countless performances by several generations of students. The piece is based on four movements selected from the Mass "Proper" and "Ordinary." The band plays in a chime-like style to announce the opening movement, "Introit." The second movement has the same three sections as the "Kyrie" from the Mass (). The theme of the third movement is the same rhythm as the word "Gloria," and the style is jubilant, just like the Mass text ("Glory to God in the highest . . . "). The fourth movement, "Alleluia," features an energetic fugue and an exciting climax.

Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4 - Edward Elgar / arr. Alfred Reed, M.J. Retford

Of all four marches that came after the overwhelmingly successful No. 1, March No. 4 seems to many people to be most closely related in general effect to the first. Just why this should be so is difficult to say. All five of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches are cast in basically the same form, a two-part A-B-AB, with the "A" part energetic and moving briskly along, and the "B" bringing a change of feeling (even though no actual change of pace is indicated) with the so-called "great tune" by way of contrast. However, it has become almost a tradition with Nos. 1 and 4 to play the final section in a slower tempo, probably in respect of Elgar's tempo marking "Grandioso" at this point. Certainly both of these "great tunes" could, and have, been considered as portraying musically the very essence and glorification of British majesty and power at the time they were written.

    Windscape - David Marlatt

is in four sections. It opens with "The Winds from the North." The driving bass line combined with the punctuated shots, represent the bitter winds that blow. This moves into "The Winds of Change." This has a shifty but steady pulse that features melody in the trumpet at first and then a countermelody added by the flutes and saxophones. Crystal glasses and a lone alto saxophone are the featured sonorities in "The Winds of Mystery." "The Winds of Change" reappears and, with several sidebar introductions of new rhythmic and melodic material, the piece ends as it should---driving and enthusiastic.

Overture to an Unscripted Movie - Ronald Royer / arr. David Marlatt

Overture to An Unscripted Movie was composed to pay homage to the orchestral scores written for Hollywood action/adventure films. The Overture is in four sections: The Hero, The Villain, The Love Theme, and The Fight. Since the Overture was written for an unscripted movie, the composer encourages both performers and audience members to create their own movie plots Big, bold and the Hollywood sound Grade 3 - this utilizes fanfares in the trumpets and places more range and technical demands on all players.

    Masquerade - Donald Coakley

Masquerade was commissioned by the Hannaford Street Silver Band. This is a brass band whose personnel is composed top freelance musicians in Toronto, Canada. Mr. Coakley wanted to personalize the piece so he created tone rows from the letter notes drawn from the names of the members of each section of the band. These individual rows were "boiled" down to one row, and its derivatives. These four motives served as the thematic, and harmonic material for the composition.

L'Esprit du Tour: A Fanfare for Lance - Randol Alan Bass

This remarkable piece captures the excitement, physical challenge, intensity and, ultimately, the thrill and sense of accomplishment a rider might experience during such a grueling and demanding physical trial as Le Tour de France. Both tonal and non-tonal compositional materials, some indeterminate and serial techniques, special percussion (a six-tom-tom cluster, heavy chains and four metal plates) along with traditional and non-traditional development procedures are used --impressing upon listeners, through sound, a sense and feel of competitive bicycling, from the point of view of the athletes themselves. In hopes of imbuing the music with the flavor of the various cultures coming together for this contest, the composition contains extant source material as well -- including La Marsellaise, The Star-Spangled Banner and a brief reference to The Eyes of Texas.
