    Jello, The Colours Of My Soul - Ben Haemhouts

    Jello...The Colours of my Soul is an assignment that was written to be a lasting memory of the untimely, dramatic death of a young child. The work came about due to various conversations between the father and the composer whereby the final resultmust be seen as an attempt by the composer to musically translate the feelings of the parents.The first part of the title, "Jello", is a combination of the names of the two children of the commissioner, namely Jelle and Lobcke, and "the Colours of mySoul" are the colours of the soul of the parents who despite the loss of one of their children, continue to cherish their two children. The introduction provides the atmosphere of grieving for the loss, whereby use is made of pure fifths in order toportray the solidarity with nature, as we are familiar with in symphonies by Bruckner. A little later a bit of the first theme is suggested, which develops into a real funeral march.The Dies Irae, as this occurs in Berlioz's Fantastic Symphony (F, E,F, D, E, C, D), forms a leitmotiv through the entire work in order to symbolise the constant battle between life and death.Shortly before the storm-passage, (where a wind machine is used) which announces disaster, fragments from children's songs areplayed to the accompaniment of a rising choir piece from behind the stage, which strengthens the imminent confrontation with death.After the introduction of the two themes in the long introduction, a quick passage follows in which all kinds ofbeautiful memories are recalled. There is story telling, laughing, and dancing. One of the previous children's songs is also cited. The Dies Irea is heard once again, this time short and fast.Bit by bit happy elements are steadily distorted untilseriousness breaks through again, like an unavoidable and unstoppable evil. The entire piece becomes evermore stirring, as if a big climax will follow. At this moment a very long fermata makes a sudden end to the hysterical allegro. The crucialmoment in the work follows...How does one deal with something as tragic as the death of one's own child? Does one mourn for what no longer is and what never will be? Or does one try to cherish the beautiful moments and continue to live with thesecolourful memories?A subdued, dignified choir piece captures the beautiful memories and ends in a positive, hopeful tone.

    The Sun Will Rise Again - Philip Sparke

    The composer writes:"On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate.It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time".Philip Sparke

    Fantasia Per La Vita E La Morte - Bert Appermont

    The mystique surrounding life and death formed the starting point of this composition. I wanted to write a work without a story, mixed up in a kind of musical quest for a new world of sound, original rhythm sequences, melodies filled with suspenseand distinct orchestral tones.The indirect cause was the birth of my first child which took place during this time, followed by the death of a close family member. At such a moment you experience just how close life and death are to each other, anddespite one being the antithesis of the other, they are incredibly similar. Both radical events are passages into new worlds and have great emotional impact. Moreover, the work was commissioned by "New Life", an orchestra that lost one of itsmusician in a plane crash, which also led me to believe that this approach would be appropriate.I would prefer not to comment on which passages in the composition concern life (birth) and which refer to death. It seems to me that it is moreinteresting to question traditional conceptions and leave it open for the listener. If you think that a passage is about birth, and this idea then shifts, it is this that raises fascinating questions, on both a musical and metaphysical level.Music isin an indirect but incredibly persuasive way in which to express the endless striving and seeking of mankind. Music can even touch eternity, as it were, and give us the feeling that we can transcend death. This endless search (and also longing) canbe heard throughout the work; as much in the sound fields and accent shifts in the first part as in the enormous tension curves and compelling themes of the second part. The semi-tone functions in this way as a guide or something to hold on to,running through the whole work and upon which much of the musical material is based. Traces of profound love resound with quiet simplicity in the slow section's melodious solos, after which the work contemplates life and death one last time, musesupon joy and sadness, on the possibilities and limitations of people and on the why of all things.I would like to dedicate this work to my dearest daughter Paulientje, to Meterke and to Johan de Jong of the "New Life" orchestra. May it fare themwell, here or in another dimension...

    Temples - Oliver Waespi

    The music of "Temples" evolved out of different sources of inspiration. The most impor-tant of them were four temples belonging to Angkor, a group of temple ruins in Cambo-dia. These temples represent several centuries of Khmer history, one of themost im-portant ancient cultures of South East Asia, and are characterised by both Buddhist and Hindu influences. Furthermore, four biblical text fragments from the Book of Eccle-siastes, chapter 3, became more and more important during thecomposition process. Hence, each of the four episodes of the work is related to a biblical text and an Angkor temple. Besides this architectural and spiritual imagery, a purely musical structure underlies the whole piece, namely a sequence ofintervals which has an architectural analogy in the height proportions of the main towers of Angkor Wat. My aim was to combine an ab-stract fabric of musical relationships with the sensual and emotional impact these tem-ples and their history made onme while visiting them.PHNOM BAKHENG"� there is a time to be born and a time to die..."The music at the beginning is inspired by the old temple "Phnom Bakheng� erected in the 9th century A.D., also referred to as "first Angkor". It isconceived as a temple-mountain, corresponding to the mythical mountain "Meru", home of the Gods according to Hindu belief. The music describes the awakening of life, the variety of living beings, the birth of human civilisation. Low, seeminglyundefined chords form the soil out of which long melodic lines begin to emerge. After a gradual increase in speed, a transi-tion leads to a lively episode characterised by bright colours and flourish-like gestures. Later on, the music becomesovershadowed by darker colours, as if the sun was dis-appearing.BAYON"... a time for war and a time for peace..."Mysterious chords build up the scene for the entry of the trumpets and trombones, placed off-stage near the audience and playing menacingsignals with increasing inten-sity. This dramatic episode depicts the war, a consequence of the diversity between different people and cultures. The temple "Bayon" with its rugged skyline, an architec-tural masterpiece dating from Angkors floweringperiod, contains many war descrip-tions on sandstone reliefs, leaving no doubts that the Khmer civilisation, like many oth-ers, was built upon a great deal of warfare.PREAH KHAN"... a time to mourn and a time to dance..."A sequence of huge chordsmarks the entry into the temple "Preah Khan", the "Sacred Sword". This temple, mysterious and partly overgrown by virgin forest, was erected as a sanctuary in the 12th century A.D. on a battlefield. After the dramatic conflict of the second episode,a dirge follows, some kind of procession. This ritual has a mournful nature at first, but becomes more and more hopeful after a sudden shift of tonality and a calm, solemn statement of the tenor horns. Later on, reminiscences of the first epi-sodeappear and lead to an increasingly joyful music.ANGKOR WAT"... a time to tear down and a time to build ..."It is now, after both an outward and an inward conflict, that the re-building of something new becomes possible. This renewal is symbolised bythe fascinating central temple "Angkor Wat" with its accomplished architecture. The motivic material of earlier epi-sodes finds itself transformed and reappears in broad and luminous sound fields which bring the work to a close.

    After receiving the commission from this work from Institut collgial Vincent Massey Collegiate Wind Ensemble and their conductor, Matthew Abraham, I was in the fortunate position of being able to spend time with the group talking about what music means to them, what it means to community and society, and also how they currently felt about that current community and society both from a personal perspective and a wider vision.It became clear that these grade 9 - 12 students had a deep understanding of the environment around them both locally and the world at large, and the difficulties that surround us all at this time. A sense of serious concern for the ecology of the planet was of key concern as was apparent which seemed to channel through a wider concern at the lack of humanity that we see every day in the street, in our city, in our country and in our world.let this place was written in response to those very concerns, and my anger that we have - in what feels like a very short space of time - descended in to a world where children are separated from their parents at the US border, where racism and hatred have become commonplace, where anti-Semitism has once again reared its ugly head, where gun and knife crime hardly makes the news such is its frequency, where we allow, as citizens of this planet, children to be victims of chemical weapons in Syria, destruction of human life in Yemen; the list is almost endless.We seem to have forgotten the many warnings that history has taught us, and none more so than the words of the plaque situated at Auschwitz-Birkenau:??For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity, where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women, and children, mainly Jews from various countries of Europe.Auschwitz-Birkenau 1940 - 1945?The title of the work, let this place, is taken from the plaque and is an invitation for us all to consider those words. The first part of the work ??cry? is both a reference to those that perished at the concentration camps and the sadness we should all feel that the words inscribed have been so easily forgotten.The second part ??despair? is where we are now; the concerns that were raised by the students, the anger I feel, the distress that we see on a daily basis. The piece doesn??t end, it merely stops; a challenge to all who play, listen and experience the piece to make a choice about the kind of world we want to live in - to cry, to despair, or to listen to the ??warning to humanity?.let this place was commissioned by, and dedicated to, Institut collgial Vincent Massey Collegiate Wind Ensemble and their conductor, Matthew Abraham.Peter Meechan 2019

    Temperamental (Concert Band) Fendall Hill

    This work by Fendall Hill was the set test for the 2021 National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, B Grade. Here it has been adapted for Concert Band. The composer writes: 'J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is deemed by many to be the 'Ulimate Composer'. He added an incredible proportion to the DNA of western music, and his influence is heard in the music of today. Like many artists, he was not overly recognised as a composer during his lifetime, and it took an 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn to ignite a recognition of his place in the music world, a place he has maintained ever since. This piece starts with a similar spark of rediscovery of the music of Bach. It contains arrangements of various works, interspersed with composition based on Bach's chord structures, sections in the style of Bach, and original sections inspired by the moods created along the way. The first section explores the Toccata, and great organ works. This leads into an exploration of his choral works, and a finale based on the Preludes. The word 'Tempered' has different meanings, and all seem to apply to the music of Bach, and these appeal to the musical, engineering and spiritual aspects of my personal life. His music reaches to the humanity and divinity, it has strength, structure and order that creates frameworks in which incredible complexity reigns; and the complexity leads to a wildness, a kind of craziness that represents a range of human moods, and can change without warning. The same piece of music affects people in very different ways. I don't know if it's Bach's music, or us, but it can seem out of control and under control at the same time - the combination is highly temperamental.
