The Italian film music composer Piero Umiliani originally composed Mah Na Mah Na in 1968 for the soundtrack of the Swedish movie Sweden - Heaven or Hell. However the piece only became a hit in the 1970s, when Jim Henson used the catchy melody in his children's TV series The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Stefan Schwalgin has produced this excellent version to give baritone saxophonists, who sometimes feel left out by the band's repertoire, a platform for their soloistic development. This gem is full of little musical surprises and will hold a special place in your bands repertoire.

A depiction of a cold, snowbound winter scene. This work was written shortly after the composer I finished a little piece called Summer Song. Winter Scene originally started life as a guitar piece but was expanded in several ways when casting it for wind band. Without looking for specific imagery, the composer imagined something like the snowbound scenes found in the Renaissance art of Pieter Breugel the Elder d. 1569. The music begins with some icy dissonance in the brass before the slow processional of the tune is first stated. There is some contrasting material in the middle which changes colour and key before the main theme returns with its slightly acerbic accompaniment.Duration: 3.30

Sedaka also recorded a Hebrew-language version, written by Chaim Kaynan. This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Gerard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting the ensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the names Jean-Paul and Gerard Frisch (in which h is considered b - as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful and lighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future. Duration: 5.30
