Rudolf Friml studied composition with Antonin Dvork at the conservatory of music of his native town. He settled in the United States of America in 1906 after having spent already five years in the States as pianist of the violin virtuoso Jan Kubelik. Friml is famous because of a number of his operettas such as 'Rose Marie' (1923) and 'The Vagabond King' (1925). The most popular Donkey Serenade is an extract from his operetta 'The Firefly' (1912). This song was even to become more popular when 'The Firefly' was turned in to the movie picture 'The Castilian Spy' by Robert Leonard in 1937.

The French composer and organist Michel Richard de Lalande (Paris, 1657 - Versailles, 1726), a contemporary of Jean-Baptiste Lully, was music teacher of the daughters of King Louis XIV and was appointed Court Composer and conductor (Matre et compositeur de la chapelle royale, surintendant et compositeur de la musique de la chambre). His music was a harmonious synthesis of the French and Italian styles. He mainly composed ballet and religious music (numerous motets), as well as some famous orchestral pieces such as the famous 'Symphonies pour les Soupers du Roi' and the four Symphonies de Nols (Christmas symphonies). The latter are orchestrations of traditional French Carols sung at Christmas Eve in the chapel of the castle at Versailles. Dsir Dondeyne, conductor of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band (Musique de Gardiens de la Paix) from 1954 to 1979, wrote this fine arrangement for symphonic band.

In 1994 composer (Sir) Elton John and scriptwriter Tim Rice worked together for the first time on the soundtrack for Walt Disney's cartoon 'The Lion King' which was turned into a very successful Broadway musical in 1997. Both artists joined forces again and this resulted in their new musical 'Aida', based on the classical love story of the Egyptian warrior Ramads, loved by two women. Ton van Grevenbroek arranged the finest tunes for symphonic band.
