One of Claude T. Smith's last completed works, "Raise Your Voice in Song" was commissioned by the Nebraska Music Educators Association for the 50th Anniversary on NMEA! It was written for the 1986 All-State Band, Choir and Orchestra for their combined performance on November 22, 1986 in Hastings, NE. This majestic work lends itself as a finale, for band alone, or a combined performance with string orchestra and/or choir (available separately). There are two sets of lyrics (secular and Christmas). The Huron Carol is Canada's oldest Christmas carol, written in 1643 by Jean de Brbeuf, a Jesuit missionary. The melody is from a tradition French folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle (A Young Maid). Intended as a gift and teaching aid to the Huron people, Brbeuf wrote the lyrics in their native language. £75.00Cotswold Dances 5. Wassail Song (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The program notes are included for each of the five movements: 1.The first movement refers to the source of the River Thames, with its rippling accompaniment figures. 2.Badminton House is a picture of the world-famous Horse Trials, with an archaic touch here and there to point to the House itself. 3. Pittville Park is the largest open space in Cheltenham, England, with Gustav Holst's birthplace at one end and the famous Pump Room at the other. The composer remembers childhood walks there and varying degrees of catching newts and the like in the central lake. 4. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswold chain, just reaching a thousand feet above sea level at one point, making it, officially, a mountain, albeit a gentle one. Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions. (Note: Some harp parts are doubled, some are more essential. If no harp, the part can be played either by electronic keyboard or piano.)

This overture was written in 2000 and pays homage to the composer Paul Hindemith. The composition is based on "Es sungen drei Engel. The song dates back to the 12th century and was originally a Christmas carol. Mahler used this melody in his 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' and in the finale of his third symphony. Paul Hindemith also uses this melody as a chorale in the 'Engelkonzert' of his 'Mathis der Maler' symphony. This melody is not only used extensively in the 'Overture to The Three Angels', it also forms the main theme of the entire central piece. In this central piece, the melody can first be heard as a fugue by the woodwind instruments and then by the brass instruments andultimately ends in a grand tutti which features all the themes of the entire work. The first and the last part of the composition are not based directly on the chorale melody but constitute a contemporary commentary of the central part. These are not literal references but rather the sounds of the heralds.
