Pilgrims' Swing - Graham Lloyd
The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims' March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician, Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes, which at the time made little sense to him. However, he did notice that the bass line was similar to a "walking bass" line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn's original bass line, melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows, maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred yearslater, he could have become one of our big band leaders!

The rhythmic dances of Kwela, the 'syncopated guitars' of Mbaqanga, the saxophones and trumpets with their supple African jazz sounds as well as the infectious and sometimes gripping choir singing. Charles Zimmerman (1862-1916) was 'bandmaster' at the U.S. Naval Academy during thirty years. He wrote his famous march Anchors aweigh at the request of the Academy's Senior Class in 1907. They asked him for a stirring inspiring march that could also be used as 'war song' for their (American) football team and ... that could also maybe remain popular for some time. This turned out to become true. Pi Scheffer's splendid swinging arrangement combining a Dixieland combo and symphonic band was a big success when recorded by the Marine Band of the Royal Dutch Navy and the Dutch Swing College Band.
