A Tribute to Harry James - Eric Coates

Prior to the second world war Harry James was a 'name'. In 1939 this trumpet player/composer founded his own orchestra with which he undertook a series of successful tours. Naohiro Iwai wrote this solo for trumpet with wind band accompaniment as an ode to Harry James, making use of the golden oldies Sleepy Lagoon and Ciribiribin.

    Ave Maria - André Waignein

Ave Maria, an excerpt from the Missa Solemnis, was written by Andr Waignein at the request of the Aosta Valley Regional Council, in Italy. Missa Solemnis contains all the musical parts that are used to accompany liturgical rites. However, the composer was keen to include an Ave Maria in memory of his mother, who was a very religious person and especially revered the Virgin Mary. This Ave Maria reveals a shimmering melody with very discreet orchestral support that allows the vocal or instrumental soloist to express their emotions through exceedingly generous musical phrases. Waignein has made this work for solo soprano or tenor and band, butit's also a very beautiful piece for several solo instruments such as flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, alto saxophone or trumpet. The composer naturally dedicated this Ave Maria to his mother. This moving piece will undoubtedly captivate your audience.

Blue Bells of Scotland - Arthur Pryor

This folk song has been arranged in a theme and variations format for a variety of solo instruments. Here it has been arranged for trumpet or trombone/euphonium with band accpmpaniment. The solo part is very reasonable and sounds harder than it is (about a Grade 3.5). This is great piece for showing off that talented soloist in your ensemble.

A Copland Portrait - David Conte

Originally commissioned by maestro Neal Gittleman, A Copland Portrait was premiered by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra in January 2000. In March of 2015, First Lieutenant Ryan Nowlin's transcription of this work for band was premiered by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Jason Fettig. ECS Publishing is proud to offer both the band and the orchestra version. Conte on the creation of this overture: "I set out quite consciously to evoke various aspects of Copland's work by combining and recombining them within the terms of my own musical personality. For example, the first theme of A Copland Portrait combines the character of a theme from The Red Pony with the rhythmic texture of the scherzo of the Third Symphony. While composing the piece I was conscious of drawing inspiration from many of Copland's works; a melodic shape here, a harmonic gesture there, until I arrived at something that felt fresh and new to me. A Copland Portrait is cast in a traditional Sonata-Allegro form. After a vigorous, syncopated orchestral tutti, the first theme is announced in the solo oboe, accompanied by a steady eighth-note ostinato. Playful interjections are stated in the flute and bassoon. The syncopated tutti returns; the first theme is stated again, this time in the low winds. This theme builds to a colorful climax, leading into a more dissonant transition section, which gradually slows and gives way to a lilting, more lyrical second theme in the clarinet. After some modest development of the second theme, a more plaintive theme stated in the muted trumpet brings the exposition to a close. A scherzando development section follows; the first four notes of the first theme are inverted and subjected to various contrapuntal treatments. This development section ends with a return of the opening syncopated motive, leading into a recapitulation of the first theme, this time in canon, and the second theme and closing theme, broadly sung. A brilliant toccata-style coda brings A Copland Portrait to a brisk conclusion."

    Nonantum Bulgar - Hankus Netsky

Adding to the minuscule number of Klezmer pieces for concert band, Nonantum Bulgar is the 20th piece published in the BandQuest series. The title, Nonantum Bulgar, refers to Nonantum, a district in Newton which is home to the city's oldest synagogue (on the National Register of Historic Places), and bulgar (pronounced 'bull-ghar'), a type of Klezmer dance. When writing the piece, the composer imagined the dedication of the Adams St. Shul, which took place over one hundred years ago and featured a prominent Boston cantor and choir and a klezmer orchestra leading a Grand March down Adams St. This upbeat work is fun to play, features a trumpet solo, and gives every instrument the opportunity to play the melody. Learn more on YouTube! BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Wilten Festival Overture - Philip Sparke

To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten in Innsbruck Philip Sparke composed Wilten Festival Overture. A bold fanfare, led by the horns, forms the opening of the work from which an expressive theme unfolds until the full band reaches a climax. Short solo statements from saxophone, horn and trumpet lead to a recapitulation of this theme which melts into a rhythmic Vivo. A robust melody is is then played by the clarinets and taken up by the whole band before a legato figure leads to a cantabile theme, again presented by the clarinets. The original Vivo melody reappears before the opening fanfare is briefly heard and the work comes to an end with ashort Coda. A great experience for the whole band!

    Dies Irae

A long standing favorite in the band repertoire, Verdi's famous opus, best known as the Manzoni Requiem is now available in this new version, designed for playability by most high school groups. Jay Bocook has retained the essence of the original by carefully placing the challenging, technical material in the skilled sections of the band (flute, 1st clar., alto sax). From the hard driving, signature opening with the solo bass drum, to the triumphant trumpet calls of the finale, this is classic literature your band should experience.

    Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton

A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

The White Rose - Philip Sparke

The White Rose was commissioned by the White Rose Concert Band from Harrogate, England. The band takes its name from the county symbol of Yorkshire, the white rose. This partly rhythmic, party lyrical piece opens with a flourish from the trumpets. Following a rhythmic melody in the clarinets there are solo passages for flute and trumpet leading to the finale which brings together elements of the whole piece.
