Austria is an industrious country. During the last century--which was characterized by extreme changes--the hard-working and ambitious people achieved a great deal, enduring two world wars and numerous political skirmishes. Despite all the problems involved in a change from a dual monarchy to a small state, Austria has found its independence. With his Austrian Overture, Thomas Doss looks toward the future. The first part of the composition provides an optimistic outlook; along with the happiness and energy, some musical humor is also present: while the horns powerfully express joy, small yodeling melodies sound throughout. As the rhythm continues in search of new ways to go, catchy tunes compete to be heard. However, in addition to the energetic, diligent Austria, there's also the quiet landscape where one can enjoy repose and beauty. These aspects - as well as the freedom of spirit and cultural life -are conveyed in the second part of the work through the surprising linking of chords, romantic phrasing, and tender melodies. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.Movement 1: Shelter Island is a small island situated near the end of Long Island, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. Hidden Light (Loyalty Among Friends), was composed on the occasion of the 75 year membership of Mr Leo Knoben at the Royal Brass Band 'Eendracht Waubach'(NL). From pride and admiration for this exceptional jubilee , but also out of gratitude for his many years of commitment as musician and member of the board, the association chose to have a memorable work written. That assignment resulted in the wonderful choral Hidden Light, for which composer Kevin Houben based himself on the following emotions and oppositions: small vs majestic, submissive vs royal and simplicity vs glory. The work starts in a very modest, dark atmosphere, after which the composition develops into a grand and lofty sound with broad melodies, exploring the full richness and colors of the 'symphonic' wind band. The interesting variety in orchestration - the small, intimate setting at the beginning and the following broad, majestic tutti passages - makes the work very varied, grateful to perform and to listen to. With Hidden Light Kevin Houben has again created an expressive and powerful composition that is highly reflective in nature. This emotional work is a tribute to an exceptional man who has been there for 'his' orchestra all his life, with a warm heart for 'his' musicians. Each musician will recognise the connection and the passion for music in this piece. Duration: 5.30

Erik Satie, born in Honfleur in Normandy (France) in 1866 is undoubtedly one of the most striking personalities in the history of French music. He composed in various, often quite divergent, styles. Besides light-hearted, entertaining works he also wrote several serious compositions, among which the three ballets: Parade, Rel che and Les Aventures de Mercure. However his piano pieces, such as Trois Gymnopedies or Gnossiennes will remain his most popular compositions. Satie co-operated with almost all great artists of his time: Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Sergej Diaghilev and Georges Braque and the composers Darius Milhaud (Le Groupe des Six) and Claude Debussy. Johan de Meij made an orchestration of three short pieces by Erik Satie: I. Prelude (from: Jack in the Box) II. Reverie (from: Trois petites pieces montees) III. Marche: Le Piccadilly (1904) It was only after Satie's death in 1925 that the manuscript of the piano piece Jack in the Box was recovered. Satie himself thought he had lost the manuscript in a bus. When his flat in Arceuil was cleaned out, a small notebook was discovered behind his piano and it contained the manuscript which was assumed to be lost forever. The R?verie (De l'Enfance de Pantagruel) is an extract from Trois petites pieces montees, originally composed for small symphony orchestra. In this suite it is meant as a restful intermezzo. It is clear that, as with Milhaud (La Creation du Monde) and Debussy (Golliwogg's Cakewalk; Le Petit Negre), it is hard to deny obvious influences of jazz music in Erik Satie's compositions. Le Piccadilly, dating from 1904, displays a lot of similarities with the compositions of Scott Joplin. Duration: 7.00

Missa Brevis Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Missa Brevis, written for choir and wind band, was commissioned by the Conseil D?partemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir.: Philippe Pfisterer) in Guebwiller (France), in celebration of the millennium of Pope Leon IX's birth in ?guisheim (France). The composer conducted the first performance on June 23, 2002. It was performed live for the French television channel France 2. The mass movements Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei are very suitable for the Catholic as well as the Protestant liturgy. For this mass, various ways for performing in diverse variable strengths are possible. An instrumental performance is possible if the brass represents the choir parts. In this option, it is desirable for the brass to be positioned separately from the rest of the band (on a gallery, for example), so that the idea of two choirs is approached. In a performance with a large choir, the brass can work very well as a support. In that case, the dynamics of the brass should be adapted somewhat, since these are actually intended for an instrumental performance. You can also leave out the brass entirely for the benefit of the choir. For the accompaniment of smaller choirs, you can opt for a small ensemble from the band. This can also be a quartet, put together as desired. For the performance of this mass, the obvious choice is one of the above options. However, as an alternative, a performance with a combination of these options (vocally/instrumentally) is also possible - not just from an artistic point of view (variation), but also from a practical starting point - for example in the case that the choir has rehearsed only two movements. With a full strength, the conductor can vary the instrumentation to his or her liking. Then the brass can also play a role in the accompaniment (instead of supporting the choir). The following combinations are possible: 1. clarinet choir (from Eb Clarinet to Bass Clarinet) 2. clarinet choir + saxophones 3. brass (flugelhorns, horns, euphoniums, bass section) 4. brass (2 trumpets / 2 trombones) 5. double reeds (optional + flute, optional + string bass) 6. tutti 7. all winds 8. all brass In a performance by brass band and choir, it is usually advisable to leave out option 1 (choir + brass + band). The choir sings self-reliantly, accompanied by a full brass band. In an instrumental performance, you can consider a combined quartet (two cornets and two trombones) + brass band. This three-part work was commissioned by Kunstfactor--the Dutch Institute for Amateur Art. Its purpose is to further the repertoire for solo percussionist and orchestral accompaniment--whether brass band, fanfare orchestra or wind band. For a good performance, the soloist should be well-versed in a variety of techniques, and should have a good understanding of the instruments not only technically, but also musically. In terms of the selection of instruments and also technique, the first and second movement are more classical in style, while the final movement--with a set-up of various so-called 'untuned' instruments--is more suited to contemporarysolo kit playing. These distinctions will become clear to the soloist while studying the piece. Sweden On Guard is part of Widkvist's earliest march production. It was composed around 1914 when he served in the engineering troops.It is worth noting that the march from the beginning was probably intended for a small sized brass band and was later rearranged for a full military band by the composer. When I searched in the Swedish War Archives many years ago, looking for more or less forgotten marches, this work, among others, appeared. This arrangement was made after hearing Astor Piazzolla s 1986 recording of his own work written in 1965. The original instrumentation of bandoneon, violin and string bass is here arranged for three wind soloists with Concert Band. The Soprano Sax is the main soloist (filling the bandoneon role), while the trombone and clarinet shares the violin part as a kind of flirting undertone to the soprano saxophone. It s not possible to make a 100% correct notation of the solo parts, so it s recommended to listen to the record album Zero Hour from 1986 to get the best impression of the work.
