The work features an exciting opening theme full of rhythmic vigor followed by a lyrical middle section featuring a solo alto sax. The overture then returns energetically to create a rousing conclusion and a fitting tribute to the spirit of adventurous times long ago.

The Exultant Heart is the winner of the NBA/Merrill Jones Composition Contest and is nothing short of remarkable. The hauntingly beautiful opening is followed by a joyful middle section that features a lively dance, alluding to a rustic wedding dance complete with drum and tambourine. The first theme then returns in a choral-like setting as the dance rhythm continues, gradually settling down to a return of the opening mood while chimes improvise like church bells fading in the distance. Absolutely spellbinding!

Echoes of the Morning Trumpet is based on a hymn tune entitled Morning Trumpet by B.F. White that was first published in The Sacred Harp Hymn Book of 1844, a book that was originally printed in shaped notes. The Sacred Harp style of singing is characterized by stark chords with plenty of open fifths and equal participation by all performers who sit and stand in blocks, by section, facing the leader in the middle. This piece features a trumpet solo in the opening, accompanied by the singing of the members of the ensemble. Various treatments of the hymn that highlight the ensemble colors follow before the magnificent close.

This vivid fanfare features rousing brass motives, dynamic woodwind flourishes and active percussion, all combining to create an explosive concert opening statement. Driving in Pittsburgh involves a fair amount of vehicular "dancing" in that theres rarely a direct route to get where you want to go. Metro Dances is a work in five sections about this driving experience. Hit the Gas! starts with a full cup of coffee and just a little less time than normal to reach our destination. Traffic "Jam" abruptly comes out of nowhere in true Pittsburgh fashion. Big Trucks appear, appropriately represented with important material for the lower winds. Next is Rush Hour, which features an optional open section with suggested solos for trumpet and alto sax. Finally, Breaking Free culminates with a brisk finish as traffic opens up and there's smooth sailing on a free and open highway.

Viva Excelsior - Wim Laseroms
Wim Laseroms composed Viva Excelsior on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of music society Excelsior in Losser (the Netherlands).After a powerful tutti entry, the percussion section bridges the period up to the first reprise. This festive march is then followed by a playful melodic theme in which the semi-quavers prevail, accompanied by a beautiful legato countermelody in the horns and euphoniums. During the second reprise a marcato bass solo and a technically sparkling and dynamic contrasting phase alternate. The trio features a new theme - starting from the chalumeau register and leading to an exuberant repeat in the brass with ornamentations by the high woodplayers.

With dark-tinted tones (low drums, heavy brass), this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel, it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.
